  • - Sardinia in the ancient and medieval worlds
av Jr., Robert J. Rowland & Robert J Rowland
    1 375,-

Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean, slightly smaller than Sicily but with a longer coastline. In contrast to Sicily's obvious 'crossroads' position, the recent debate on the relative 'isolation' of Sardinia is analyzed in Robert Rowland's fascinating and accessible 'archaeological history' of the island, spanning the Prehistoric era of dolmens, menhirs and the Nuragic Civilization, to later Medieval times and Pope Boniface's creation of the joint Kingdom of Sardinia and Corsica in 1297. Chapter 1 includes a detailed island setting, and a feature of each chapter is the author's use of paragraph keyword-headings throughout for quick references.

This book is a study of the process by which herbicidal military policy was made in Southeast Asia. The author relates the intense controversy over the effects of the Agent Orange spraying program. He connects policy to operations, showing how pressure from scientists and disagreements within the government imposed limits on the program. He explores the technical difficulties in spraying herbicides; and he pays tribute to the Ranch Hand airmen who flew planes "low and slow" over enemy positions (altogether, Ranch Hand aircraft took over 7,000 hits). Since the 1975 renunciation of the use of herbicides, this military episode has remained unique in U.S. history. Includes notes, appendices, bibliography, and photos.

This book tells the complete story of the film's production, reception and legacy.

In a trio of Island Boy Photobooks subtitled "My Life in Pictures," Arnold presents a visual history of his family and that of his wife, Helena. Through hundreds of family photos - most in full color - "My Life in Pictures 1" presents Arnold's and Helena's grandparents, parents, and other family members. The story continues through 70 years of family and island history, from 1910 to 1979. That period had its personal and community tragedies, including the fatal crashes of two jet airliners and a massive, but thankfully non-fatal, fire aboard a visiting cruise ship. The 1970s also had its happy events, including Arnold and Helena's wedding and the birth of their daughter, Selene. Future installments in the trilogy will focus on the 1980s and 1990s in "My Life in Pictures 2" and bring things up to date in the 21st Century in "My Life in Pictures 3."

For 35 years (1971 to 2006), Arnold was an auditor with the U.S. Department of the Interior. His office audited the revenues, expenditures, and operations of the government of the U.S. Virgin Islands. From 1997 to 2001, Arnold also supervised Interior's audit office on the island of Guam. That office audited the finances of the Pacific islands that receive Federal grants. In this second in a series of Island Boy Photobooks, Arnold presents a visual tour of the Pacific islands with more than 340 stunning, full color photographs and 13 maps. This photobook includes stops in the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Guam, Saipan, American Samoa, Palau, and the Hawaiian island of Oahu. This photobook not only highlights the beauty of these islands, but it also contains short histories of the sometimes violent history of the islands. The photobook would be a great souvenir for anyone who wants a keepsake of a treasured visit to the Pacific islands or a "wish list" for a future visit.

In the 1600s, Denmark established settlements on the islands of St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix. They became known as the Danish West Indies. In the early days of World War I, the United States took a keen interest in the islands because of their location and the possibility they might fall under control of Germany. Denmark agreed to sell the islands to the United States and, on March 31, 1917, the Danish West Indies were officially transferred to the United States, becoming the U.S. Virgin Islands. This first of a series of Island Boy Photobooks presents a visual history of the U.S. Virgin Islands in 311 stunning photographs (267 in full color). This "one of a kind" book showcases the islands of St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John over a period of 115 years - from 1900 to 2014. The photos not only highlight the islands as they were but also as they are today, making this book a great souvenir for anyone who wants a keepsake of a treasured visit to the islands or a fulfilling lifetime there.

The Ventures are recognized as the most popular and successful instrumental rock and roll band in the world. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008, the 50th anniversary of the band's formation by Don Wilson and Bob Bogle. This book offers my suggestions for what I consider to be an "essential albums collection" of The Ventures' music. I limited the listings to albums (LPs, EPs, and CDs) released in the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom that would provide a reasonably complete library of the almost 1,200 different songs recorded by The Ventures during their 55 years of existence to date (1959 to 2014). If you have all of these albums, you'll have virtually the entire recorded and officially-released library of The Ventures' music. Please note that this book contains album cover art, label information, and track list for each album listed. It does not include review commentary on the albums.

The International Space Elevator Consortium conducted a year-long study on the development of a space elevator Earth Port. This report addresses the functional requirements and missions leading to a mature engineering complex along the equator. The report represents the culmination of efforts by multiple contributors describing the functions and operations of the Earth Port and how it interacts with other space elevator nodes. The challenge was to bring in a fresh perspective on an Earth Port by leveraging experts in many fields beyond those normally associated with space elevators. As a result of the contributions from a variety of professional backgrounds, this study should reflect a more realistic perspective of the activities at the Earth Port of a future space elevator.

In this book, Dr. White discuss discusses all kinds of things relating to life and religion, as well as the church and the ministry. But the book is really about people, all kinds of people, especially religious ones. His stories about them go all the way from Kinston to Wilmington through Thomasville, Morganton, Wake Forest, Wilson, Granite Falls, Snow Hill, Durham, Elizabeth City, and Hillsborough, all places where he has lived in his native state. Brightie White writes just like he is sitting down with you in your home and telling you something interesting that you will enjoy hearing about. He has a knack for taking his personal experiences and turning them into lessons for life. Often in his stories, he is like a bystander watching what is happening, because they're not so much about him as about other people and what we can learn from their behavior. The result is often humorous, frequently inspirational, regularly instructional, and sometimes controversial.
