Nach gut vier Jahren auf französischen Schiffen heuert er bei der britischen Handelsmarine an und lernt, mit 21 Jahren, Englisch. Er fährt auf den Weltmeeren und macht Karriere, 1888 wird er Kapitän des Dreimasters »Otago«. 1889 beginnt er zu schreiben, nicht in seiner polnischen Muttersprache, sondern auf Englisch. 1894 hängt er die Seefahrt an den Nagel, 1896 heiratet er die Engländerin Jessy George und lässt sich in England nieder. In großer Dichte erscheinen nun seine Bücher, die seine Reisen verarbeiten und dabei vor allem die Begegnungen mit Menschen in den Fokus rücken. Am 3. August 1924 stirbt mit Joseph Conrad einer der wichtigsten englischsprachigen Schriftsteller seiner Zeit an Herzversagen.
