Sa tante l'envoie en pèlerinage à Jérusalem avec pour mission de lui ramener une sainte relique miraculeuse. Après bien des péripéties, une nausée d'actes religieux et «avec un désespéré mépris de tout...», il prend le chemin du retour, mission réussie. Mais... Romanfarce satirique et féroce.
José Maria Eça de Queirós, the first great modern Portuguese novelist, wrote The Yellow Sofa with (in his own words) "no digressions, no rhetoric," creating a book where "everything is interesting and dramatic and quickly narrated."
