Goethes Märchen von einem reisenden Tauge­nichts und dessen leidenschaftlicher Beziehung zu einer schönen Unbekannten beruht auf dem uralten Mythos der Verbindung eines Menschen mit einem nichtmenschlichen Wesen, der schon in der vedischen und griechischen Literatur zu finden ist. Goethe wandelte den Stoff so eigenwillig ab, dass er daraus eine »neue Melusine« schuf. Der Ich­erzähler ist eine Figur aus »Wilhelm Meisters Wanderjahre«, Goethes spätem Roman, der als sein persönlichstes Werk gilt, in dem viele kleine Geschichten erzählt werden. Die phantasievolle Erzählung ist illustriert mit Farbbildern von M. Wehlau und mit Pinselzeichnungen von Arnold Bierwisch. Ein Glossar am Ende erklärt altertümliche Wörter für den Schulunterricht.

Goethes Märchen ist eines der am wenigsten bekannten Werke Goethes und doch eines seiner geheimnisvollsten und bezauberndsten. Es erschien erstmals 1795 in der von Schiller heraus­gegebenen Zeitschrift »Die Horen«. Historischer Hintergrund ist die Französische Revolution, deren Wirkung auf Deutschland Schiller in einem Brief an Goethe als den ¿Schatten des Riesen¿ bezeichnete. Als reales Vorbild für den Schauplatz dieser rätselhaften Dichtung sehen einige Interpreten das antike Rom mit Fähre und Pantheon. Die englische Übersetzung von Thomas Carlyle erschien 1832.Goethe¿s Fairy Tale is one of Goethe¿s least known works and yet one of his most mysterious and enchanting. It first appeared in 1795 in the journal ¿Die Horen¿, edited by Schiller. The historical background is the French Revolution, whose effect on Germany Schiller described in a letter to Goethe as the ¿shadow of the giant¿. Some interpreters see ancient Rome with its ferry and Pantheon as the real-life model for the setting of this enigmatic poetry. The translation by Thomas Carlyle was first published in 1832.

As Faust proceeds with his devilish guide, it is his striving for understanding that becomes important, not the attainment, and in fact this is what saves him in the end.Part I of Faust, which Goethe published twenty-four years before its sequel, deals with Faust's journey through the everyday world and his love for Gretchen. It is made especially memorable in this translation, which Victor Lange, Chairman of the Department of German at Princeton, has called "certainly the most usable and most appealing Faust translation in English. It is modern without losing the dignity of the original and is perhaps the only translation that conveys something of the freshness and poetic vitality of Goethe's own speech."
