As Jared Delaney rides home from a cattle drive to Colorado, he is haunted by a nightmare of menace and impending change, signified by the moon encircled by a hazy band of light . . . a halo moon. When he arrives in Cimarrón, he is shocked to discover that his friend and mentor, Sheriff Nathan Averill, has been murdered. Against his wife's wishes, he agrees to seek vigilante justice to avenge Nathan's death. Estranged from his family and friends, Jared travels the perilous trail to vengeance, unaware that a truly evil man is stalking him and his family at the same time. Refusing to accept the counsel of those close to him, he finds moral guidance from an unlikely source-a young man with a checkered past on the run from the law. Will the end justify the means? How many people will die along the way?

In 1879, Franklin County, Mississippi, George Walker Guice's seemingly normal life is forever altered as he quickly takes center stage in a feud with the neighboring Hawley family. The feud, which will end on the busy streets of Natchez, Mississippi, in 1881, quickly turns violent. Between 1879 and 1883, a very young George W. Guice will be shot by his nemesis, retaliate against his adversary, face a murder trial, lose an appeal to the Mississippi Supreme Court, and surrender himself to the state penitentiary to serve a life sentence. Facing an unknown future, George Guice senses renewed life after receiving a pardon in 1886. With his newfound freedom, Guice gradually attempts to, once again, live an ordinary life. Before long, he finds work as a Jackson, Mississippi, police officer. For a time, it appears as if Guice has truly put his past behind him; however, that changes on January 14, 1893. On this day, Officers George Walker Guice and Percy Clifton Hines are directed to arrest two vagrants. While in the performance of their duty, a violent shoot-out occurs within earshot of city hall. When the gunfire stops, two men lay on the ground, fatally wounded. The following months produce two trials, an appeal to the Mississippi Supreme Court, and an unexpected twist for two young defendants. Based on true events, this story follows the short adult life of George Walker Guice and shows that Southern justice often has a way of working itself out.

The year 2016 was heartbreaking for law enforcement agencies across the United States, with 140 officers being killed in the line of duty. Their deaths, and the deaths of those who died so long ago, should never be forgotten. Officer Down: 1850-1900, Volume 1 is a compilation of seventeen riveting stories of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty between 1850 and 1900. These stories are pulled directly from various newspapers across the United States, captivating the reader just as they did when first put to print. Many of the stories are so mesmerizing, you can practically hear the gunfire erupt while choking on the pungent aroma of spent gunpowder as it fills the air. The book begins with the shooting of Newark, New Jersey, police officers Benjamin Elsden and Augustus Dickerson in July 1876. The shootings were perpetrated by three notorious brothers, who met justice in an unconventional manner. The final chapter is a fascinating case involving the death of multiple law enforcement officers in the state of Washington at the hands of Thomas Blanck. This book is a tribute to all the men and women who wear a badge and carry a weapon for a living. These stories are retold, so they will never be forgotten.
