OVERLAND TO SOUTH AMERICA BY PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION describes a 9,000 mile journey the author made from the United States to Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1964. He made the entire trip overland by buses and trains, except for a short air hop over the Darien region of Panama and Colombia, where there was no road across. The fares for the buses, trains, and air hop totaled $199.Although prices have risen dramatically since then and now as this book is published for the first time in 2015, the journey detailed in this book remains one of the cheapest and most fascinating overland routes in the world. The author continued traveling overland from Buenos Aires to Montevideo, Uruguay, and then northward in Brazil to Rio de Janeiro and finally to Brasilia. His return to the United States was by air with a long stopover in Manaus, Brazil. This was a defining and life changing journey for the author, and a similar trip following the same routes detailed in this book can still be made today.

His home ports were Santa Barbara, California, and San Diego, California. This was followed by a year of land living in a trailer house before he started living aboard a 17-foot long Dotline power boat named Boat-Boat in Stockton, California, on the California Delta in 1977. • - All My Houses Have Wheels
    av Jack Wiley

WHEELIE LIVING: ALL MY HOUSES HAVE WHEELS explores the possibilities of living in houses that have wheels, including RVs, park model trailer houses, and mobile homes. These are viable alternatives to living in houses fixed in one place on foundations. Houses on wheels are generally cheaper to own and live in than are conventional houses. This is generally true even if the houses on wheels are "permanently" parked, as mobile homes and park model trailer houses usually are. Some houses on wheels called recreational vehicles (RVs) - especially motorhomes, travel trailers, and fifth wheels - have the advantage that you can not only live in them but also travel in them. All of the houses that the author Jack Wiley lives in now - a 10 foot wide by 58 foot long mobile home and two small motorhomes that he uses for general transportation and for on-the-road RVing - have wheels, and this has been true for all of the houses he has lived in since February 1998, which totals up to about eighteen years. In addition to this, he had lived in three different trailer houses for a total of about five years previous to this. This book covers not only the how and why of his own wheelie living, but also how he has seen other people doing it. He also gives many other possibilities for doing it that he has heard of or thought of.

  • - An Odyssey of Switching Careers and Becoming a Writer
    av Jack Wiley
    175,-

MY WRITING AND I: AN ODYSSEY OF SWITCHING CAREERS AND BECOMING A WRITER is a first person account of how the author Jack Wiley made a career switch in 1972 at 35 years of age that stunned his friends. Four years after earning a PhD, he quit his position as a research physiologist and became a writer. This was not an easy decision. His idea (or was it a dream?) was to make his living as a writer and to live aboard and do cruising in his sailboat, Sea Puppy. He was fed up being tied down in laboratories and classrooms and wanted a life of freedom and adventure. He wanted to go off on his own so that he could do his own thinking. However, he was by no means certain that he could make enough money from writing to support himself. He justified the decision with the idea that if the writing did not work out, He could always return to teaching and research. With not much money in the bank and two book contracts with piddling advances, he set sail to make this dream a reality. Fortunately, he owned Sea Puppy, and living aboard gave him an inexpensive place to live while he faced the challenge of making enough money to live on from his writing. This book is the story of what led up to this turning point in his life and the uncharted course his life took after that. It includes doing adventurous things that he wanted to do anyway so that he could write books about them, publishing with traditional publisher, moving on to self-publishing and starting his own one-person publishing company where he did on-demand publishing, and finally self-publishing with Amazon Kindle and CreateSpace. For forty-four years from 1972 to the time of writing of this book in 2016, he has made his living entirely from his writing. He is the author of more than fifty books.
