Hilaire Belloc lived a remarkably accomplished life, serving as President of the Oxford Union and as a Member of the British Parliament. The author of over 150 works, Belloc wrote numerous essays, travelogues, and volumes on history, politics, and economics. Among the best-known of his non-fiction works is "The Servile State". First published in 1912, this work is an economic history of Europe, starting in ancient times, through the middle ages, to the industrial revolution, and finally culminating in an assessment of the state of the European economy in the first part of the 20th century. Belloc begins his thesis with an examination of the impact of slavery in ancient times, serfdom in the Middle Ages, and posits his theories on how European society transitioned to its current state of capitalism. Largely a polemic against the social reforms of the early 20th century, Belloc argues that state regulation will ultimately give rise to a new type of slavery by an authoritarian state. While his predictions regarding the results of state regulation over the excesses of capitalism have proved to be radically hyperbolic, "The Servile State" remains an insightful discussion of the state of political economics in the early part of the 20th century. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

In this collection of short biographies Hilaire Belloc, one of the great Catholic historians of the twentieth century, shares his views on the principal characters of the Protestant Reformation, focusing primarily on those figures concerned with the events in England.Through each account, Belloc demonstrates that the motives of the Protestant leaders were rarely religious in nature, but usually political or economic. He reminds the reader that European Christendom was once a single united entity, under the authority of the Catholic Church, each country viewing itself as a single "province" of the whole. However, many of Europe's Princes resented the power that the Bishop of Rome held in their own lands. The Reformation, aided by the rise of Nationalism, was a means for the nobles of Europe to shake off Papal authority and rule their territory independently. It also gave European monarchs control over the Church and all of its property in their realm, including the taxes that would normally be sent to Rome. Therefore, the nobles grew rich by confiscating the wealth of the Church, and resisted any form of reconciliation if that meant returning the wealth to its rightful owner. In subsequent generations, the fear of this possibility gave the noble classes an incentive to remain in the Protestant camp. What's more, the political leaders of the "Counter Reformation" were not as effective as they ought to have been, often allowing their own dynastic or nationalistic agendas to take precedence over the restoration of religious unity in Europe. As usual, Belloc's historical perspective offers the sort of timeless wisdom rarely duplicated in modern times.

Joseph Hilaire Pierre René Belloc (27 July 1870 - 16 July 1953) was a Franco-English writer and historian of the early twentieth century. Belloc was also an orator, poet, sailor, satirist, writer of letters, soldier, and political activist. His Catholic faith had a strong effect on his works. Belloc became a naturalised British subject in 1902 while retaining his French citizenship. He served as President of the Oxford Union and later MP for Salford South from 1906 to 1910. Belloc was a noted disputant, with a number of long-running feuds. Belloc's writings encompassed religious poetry and comic verse for children. His widely sold Cautionary Tales for Children included "Jim, who ran away from his nurse, and was eaten by a lion" and "Matilda, who told lies and was burned to death".
