"On the Field of Glory" is a historical novel by the Polish author Henryk Sienkiewicz. The novel tells a story of a young impoverished Polish nobleman and his love for a young aristocratic woman. The story is set during the reign of King John III Sobieski up to the eve of the Battle of Vienna.

Quo Vadis is a historical novel written by Henryk Sienkiewicz. "Quo vadis, Domine?" is Latin for "Where are you going, Lord?" and appears in Chapter 69 of the novel in a retelling of a story from the apocryphal Acts of Peter, in which Peter flees Rome but, on his way, meets Jesus and asks him why he is going to Rome. Jesus says, "If thou desertest my people, I am going to Rome to be crucified a second time", which shames Peter into going back to Rome to accept martyrdom.

Originally published in Polish in 1896 by Nobel Prize-winning author Henryk Sienkiewicz, "Quo Vadis: A Narrative of the Time of Nero" is the story of a love that develops in Rome between a young Christian woman, Lygia, and Marcus Vinicius, a Roman patrician, during the reign of Nero in 64 AD. The title "Quo Vadis" is translated from Latin as "Where are you going?" The quote is a reference to the New Testament verse John 13:36, which states "Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards." Sienkiewicz exhaustively researched the Roman Empire and the result is an incredibly detailed and believable story. Der Roman handelt vom Kampf der Polen im Osmanisch-Polnischen Krieg zwischen 1672 und 1676 gegen die nach Norden vorrückenden Türken. Namensgebender Protagonist der Geschichte ist der fiktive Oberst Michal Wolodyjowski. Aus dem Buch: "Die Reise des Herrn Zagloba ging indessen nicht so rasch von statten, wie er es selbst geglaubt, wie er es seinen Gefährten versprochen hatte. Je mehr er sich Warschau näherte, desto langsamer kam er vorwärts. Es war die Zeit, in der Jan Kazimir, der König, der Staatsmann und der große Feldherr auf den Thron verzichtete, nachdem er die Kriegsflamme an den Grenzen des Reiches erstickt, nachdem er die Republik vor der drohenden Sintflut gerettet hatte. Geduldig hatte er alles über sich ergehen lassen, alles ertragen, seine Brust hatte er den Streichen des äußeren Feindes entgegengesetzt, als er aber dann später bei seinen inneren Reformversuchen bei dem Volke statt auf Hülfe nur auf Widerstand stieß, nur Undank erntete, da nahm er freiwillig von seinem geweihten Haupte die Krone herab, welche ihm zur unerträglichen Bürde geworden war."
