This is a dual-language book with the French text on the left side, and the English text on the right side of each spread. The texts are precisely synchronized. A great book for learning both languages while reading a French classic masterpiece. Translated by Eleanor Marx, Karl Marx's daughter.

Part II of Bouvard and Pecuchet also includes several bonus shorts: the play "The Dance of Death," an essay on Rabelais, and other non-fiction.GUSTAVE FLAUBERT (1821-1880) was the son of a French surgeon. He studied law in Paris but soon returned to his hometown (Croisset, near Rouen) to devote his life to writing. He is the author of the immortal Madame Bovary (1856), a novel about the loves and frustrations of a romantic woman married to a provincial dullard. The book was criticized for immorality and prosecuted, but Flaubert won the case. Of the extremely well-realized heroine, he once remarked, "I am her." The novel is one of the greatest explorations of a female character by a male writer, in all of literature. Among Flaubert's other notable works are Salammbo (1863), a historical romance of ancient Carthage which influenced Robert E. Howard (the author of the Conan series), and The Temptation of Saint Anthony, which was translated into vivid, almost hallucinogenic English prose by Lafcadio Hearn. Flaubert also wrote plays, short stories, and the long satire Bouvard and Pecuchet. His life was outwardly uneventful, but full. He was heavily influenced by several women, including his mother, a mistress, and a woman ten years his senior with whom he fell in love as a young man. He travelled to North Africa and the Middle East in 1851. He received honors from the emperor Napoleon III. Among his friends and associates were Emile Zola, George Sand, and the Russian writer Ivan Turgenev. His work is characterized by criticism of small-town bourgois values, a curious tendency to romanticism, a fondness for the exotic, and a dedication to the then rising Realist movement, with its dedication to depicting life as it is, without judgment.

HarperCollins is proud to present its new range of best-loved, essential classics.'...for her, life was as cold as an attic with a window looking to the north, and ennui, like a spider, was silently spinning its shadowy web in every cranny of her heart.'Married to Charles, a provincial doctor, Emma Bovary yearns for a more glamorous life. Disenchanted with her husband and seeking an escape from their dull marriage she is soon tempted into a brief romantic liaison with another man. Although short-lived, she remains desirous of passion and the finer things in life and embarks on another affair, destroying her reputation.Considered scandalous at the time, Emma Bovary's superficial and immoral behaviour shocked readers and caused moral outcry. Flaubert holds up to ridicule not only Madame Bovary herself, but the society that dares to judge her.

In A Simple Heart, the poignant story that inspired Julian Barnes' Flaubert's Parrot, Félicité, a French housemaid, approaches a lifetime of servitude with human-scaled but angelic aplomb. No other author has imparted so much beauty and integrity to so modest an existence. Flaubert's "great saint" endures loss after loss by embracing the rich, true rhythms of life: the comfort of domesticity, the solace of the Church, and the depth of memory. This novella showcases Flaubert's perfectly honed realism: a delicate counterpoint of daily events with their psychological repercussions. "Flaubert is diagnosis," Ezra Pound wrote, "the whole of Flaubert, the whole fight for the novel as 'histoire morale contemporaine' was a fight against maxims, against abstractions, a fight back toward a human and/or total conception."
