"A Tale of Two Cities" is a Dickens masterpiece set against the era of the bloody French Revolution. In fact, the original subtitle of the novel was: "A Story of the French Revolution." In the novel, Paris and London, with their respective charms and chasms, form the backdrop against which both good and bad men attempt to keep their heads above water. It was indeed the best of times and the worst of times--like all times have been, are, and always will be. Dickens' "tale of two cities" turns out, in actuality, to be the tale of all cities.
"The Pickwick Papers" was Charles Dickens' first novel, establishing him immediately as one of England's greatest writers. Initially released in serial form, it was immensely popular. It was known for memorable characters and depictions of life in England that were accurate and relatable. The story recounts the adventures of the Pickwikians as they explore the English countryside and then share their tales with each other. Originally published in serial form from 1855 to 1857, "Little Dorrit" is characteristic of Charles Dickens' later works. The story is a condemnation of British society, particularly of the system of debtor's prisons, an issue that was of particular importance to Dickens as his father had been imprisoned for his debts when Dickens was a young man. Through the memorable characters of Little Amy Dorrit and her father William Dorrit, as well as the disenchanted Arthur Clennam, recently returned from abroad, Dickens weaves a suspenseful tale that plumbs the depths of lives confined by poverty and their own internal shortcomings. Despite the changing fortunes of many of the characters, financial scandal and personal ruin is never far behind them, and they must use their wits and intelligence to seek freedom in unexpected ways. "Little Dorrit" is in turns a touching romance, a biting social commentary, and a cautionary tale of lies, and personal responsibility. Dickens, at the height of his illustrious career, employs his masterful irony, humor, and experienced writing style to create a powerful story about both physical and psychological imprisonment, as well as the freedom of a spirit that feels love, kindness, and acceptance. A body is found in the Thames and identified as that of John Harmon, a young man recently returned to London to receive his inheritance. William Dorrit, imprisoned as a debtor, has been a resident of Marshalsea debtors'' prison for so long that his three children - snobbish Fanny, idle Edward and Amy (known as Little Dorrit) - have all grown up there, and Amy was born there. Their mother is dead and Little Dorrit, devoted to her father, supports them both through her sewing.
The Old Curiosity Shop tells the story of Nell Trent, a beautiful and virtuous young girl of "not quite fourteen". An orphan, she lives with her grandfather in his shop of odds and ends. Secretly obsessed with ensuring that Nell does not die in poverty, grandfather attempts to provide Nell with a good inheritance through gambling at cards. He keeps his nocturnal games a secret, but borrows heavily from the evil Daniel Quilp, a malicious, grotesquely deformed, hunchbacked dwarf moneylender. In the end, he gambles away what little money they have, and Quilp seizes the opportunity to take possession of the shop and evict Nell and her grandfather. Grandfather suffers a breakdown that leaves him bereft of his wits, and Nell takes him away to the Midlands of England, to live as beggars.
The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby tells the story of a young man who must support his mother and sister, as his father dies unexpectedly after losing all of his money in a poor investment. Nicholas, his mother and his younger sister, Kate, are forced to give up their comfortable lifestyle in Devonshire and travel to London to seek the aid of their only relative, Nicholas''s uncle Ralph, a cold and ruthless businessman. Nicholas starts working as a tutor in an abusive all-boys boarding school, but that is only the beginning of his adventures and misadventures.
"Oliver Twist" was Charles Dickens' second novel, further establishing him as one of England's greatest writers of the 19th century. Set in London in the midst of an industrial revolution, the novel treats issues such as child labor, poverty, and criminal greed. Originally published in serial form and being titled "The Parish Boy's Progress," the book remains popular to readers today, hundreds of years later.
