Josh and Maisie Evans are good samaritans and enjoy lending a helping hand to lonely elderly ladies. Auntie Flo had lived with them for years until her death, leaving the Evans' her Estate, such as it was. When they meet Mrs Fingal on holiday in Rimini Mrs Fingal comes to live with them and stays in Auntie Flo's old room.

Esther Williams is thirty and single. She lives with her grandmother and her life is one of routine and order; she takes a seaside holiday each year and every Thursday she goes to the cinema alone. Errol, a young man finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. In a North-West London suburb on a wet evening Errol mistakenly rings the doorbell of the house of Nelly and Arthur Didcot. Wet-through and coughing he asks about a room. Despite arriving at the wrong house Nelly invites him in to stay just for one night.

Behind their heavily bolted doors the lonely elderly ladies are surrounded by the treasures that they've collected over the years, which makes them necessarily wary of strangers and cautious of allowing people into their sanctuaries, for fear that their hidden savings could fall prey to unscrupulous people.
