Mit einem Geleitwort von Bundesrat Philipp Etter, 9 Bände und 2 Geleitbände, Zürich: Artemis, 1945¿1958.Umschlaggestaltung von Thomas Schultz-Overhage unter Verwendung des Bildes: Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Summer offering, 1911.Gesetzt aus der Minion Pro, 16 pt.Henricus - Edition Deutsche Klassik GmbHÜber den Autor:1845 als Sohn eines liberalen Politikers in Liestal in der Schweiz geboren, beginnt Spitteler zunächst ein Jurastudium in Basel und studiert ab 1865 Theologie in Heidelberg, Zürich und Basel. 1870 tritt er die Stelle eines Erziehers im Haus eines russischen Generals in St. Petersburg an. Neun Jahre später kehrt er in die Schweiz zurück und arbeitet als Lehrer bis er 1885 Redakteur der »Neuen Züricher Zeitung« wird. Erst mit seinem Epos »Olympischer Frühling« stellt sich 1905 die gewünschte Anerkennung seines literarischen Schaffens ein. 1914 spricht er sich für die Neutralität der Schweiz und gegen die Vereinnahmung seines Werkes durch den deutschen Nationalismus aus. 1920 erhält er rückwirkend für 1919 den Nobelpreis für Literatur. Am 29. Dezember 1924 stirbt Carl Spitteler in Luzern.
