This book highlights the impact of Design on Education, specifically on how design can shape the spaces and tools for learning. Recent research shows that physical dimensions of the built Environment have an impact on learning outcomes, and that there is a need to acknowledge the role of design for education. Pedagogies and practices are often designed around 'a‐one‐size‐fits‐all' teacher directed model of education. This book argues that we can no longer continue to build for the past but need to design for the future, shifting from a culture of teaching to a culture of learning. The book opens with a comprehensive analysis of four learning theories, including behaviourism, cognitive constructivism, social constructivism and connectivism, and relates them with the ways in which we learn (instructionist, experiential, collaborative and networking), and with what type of spaces and tools we need to support these learning types. The book goes on to promote a cohesive strategy to improve future learning and teaching environments by bringing together experts from different areas of knowledge, including designers, architects, engineers, educators and researchers that value the impact of spaces and tools on learning. The book also presents innovative research outcomes and case studies from countries and continents where design plays a key role for education, including the UK, Europe, Australia and Asia.
