Amanullah Khan is passionate about Poetry. His previous book, Barefoot in the Rain, was a collection of villanelles. In Heaven in the Woods, he explores multiple styles of poetry, as he felt constrained by the villanelle format. He created a new means of expanding the expression of the villanelle's composition. Thus, a new style of poetry, the Ballanelle, was born. It allows for the extension of thought and stretched imagination yet keeps the reader focused as in a villanelle. In Heaven in the Woods, he writes about themes such as family, nature and life.

Amanullah Khan's poems assume many forms, from contemporary verse to Villanelle with a sprinkling of Sufi thought. He takes the reader on a sweeping journey of life experiences; balancing joy and sorrow where they intersect and diverge and spirituality at the metaphysical level.
