Der Oscar-prämierte französische Schauspieler-Regisseur Jacques Tati (1907-1982), einer der innovativsten und originellsten Filmemacher seiner Zeit, war ein so genauer wie kritischer Beobachter des Alltags. In seinen Filmen benutzte er Gesten, Mimik, Kostüme, Requisiten, Bühnenbilder, Geräusche, Musik - alles, nur eben keine Dialoge -, und erreichte damit ein Höchstmaß an Komik. Tatis Bestandsaufnahmen der modernen Welt wirken universell und sind ein Muss für jeden, der sich an der Tragikomödie des modernen Lebens erfreut. Tati sagte einmal: "Ich will, dass der Film erst anfängt, wenn man das Kino verlässt." Seine größte Leistung bestand darin zu zeigen, dass das Leben an sich, für jeden, überall auf der Welt, nichts als ein einziges Schauspiel darstellt.
