Agile and lean office are so deeply interwoven that if you are doing agile you are doing lean, and vice-versa. Those considering process change will likely find the description of the interrelatedness interesting and enlightening. The question should I use Lean office instead of Agile office is based on a false premise because office environments are complex systems. There can be thousands of integration points as information flows along a value stream. As a result it is almost impossible to understand in detail how a change to one part of a value stream will impact the rest of the system-wide value streams of the organization. The Agile and Lean office approach use a program of continuous performance improvement. This approach does not try to accomplish too much at once and risk complete failure, but to make an incremental change to a value stream, wait for the system to settle down, fully understand the system-wide impact of the changes, and then decide what new change to make.

The model of asking the work team to think, to experiment, and to learn from the data, is the model of lean management. It is management that is humble and not arrogant. It is management that observes, encourages, challenges, and learns. It is management that gathers the facts, encourages experimentation, and spreads best practices. It is management that practices what they preach to others. In short, lean management is very much about asking questions and trying things, or encouraging others to try things. Lean management itself is not much about providing the right answer but it is very much about asking the right question.

There are some people who think there is no place for 5s Lean at home. Just like those who say you can't bake without ovens! The 5S process of Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain is a lean manufacturing process in use by the Toyota Production System for decades. The premise of 5S is to help organize and improve the work conditions of a workplace. Yet this process can also be used for home as well. These steps can help you get your home organized now and keep it that way in the future.

Lean Accounting supports the principle of eliminating waste and streamlining the business processes to create maximum value. So lean management accounting metrics is all about breaking away from traditional cost accounting cost objects like product or job and is driven by a new cost object 'Value Stream'.As part of lean accounting exercise, we define the scope of value stream cost object and map the business process activities to this cost object.Lean accounting helps organisations going through lean transformation to develop their management accounting systems to support the lean philosophy. Traditional accounting systems (particularly standard costing) result in decisions which are anti-lean.

Supply chain competence affects your bottom-line in more direct ways than you might realize. In this book we reviewed the role of controlling cost of sales through supply chain competencies and its effect on the corporate financial statements. The balancing act of maintaining a high level of service and low costs is becoming harder for supply chain managers as businesses try to meet the growing customer mantra of "more for less." This pressure comes at a time when business is becoming more global, supply chains are lengthening, and competition is on the rise.Although this challenge is not new, the outlook is that it will intensify as a number of factors; economic, regulatory and market-driven become more acute. Consequently, supply chain performance will have increasingly significant impact on overall business success.

The UAE is situated in the southeast of the Arabian Peninsula on the Persian Gulf, bordering Oman and Saudi Arabia. The UAE is a federation of seven Emirates each with its own Ruler.Saudi Arabia's command economy is petroleum-based; roughly 75%% of budget revenues and 90%% of export earnings come from the oil industry.Kuwait's economy is heavily dependent on oil revenues. The Kuwait government is keen on reducing the dependence on crude oil revenue.Bahrain is a small island with a population of just over 1 million people. Bahrain's total area covers 770 sq km; it is the smallest of the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states and consists of 33 islands. The main source of Qatar's wealth is its vast reserves of oil and natural gas (it has the world's 3rd largest natural gas reserves) which have made it one of the richest countries in the world.

When FTSE 100 CEO's were polled and asked the question, "Are your sales people calling on the right customers, at the right time, with the right offer?" 99.3%% responded, "I don't know." Which shouldn't surprise. Sales and Marketing are still the last bastions of protected turf, limited management scrutiny and lack of accountability. Unfortunately, the important lessons learned and the gains in effectiveness and efficiency derived from lean manufacturing have not been successfully translated to the Sales and Marketing environments. And, it's understandable.Sales involves people doing business with people, not people doing activities with machines and processes. Sales is perceived to be more of an art form than a science. Yet, ironically, Sales is virtually a pure science and, as such, is both measurable and predictable. If we are correct, the disciplines of Lean can easily be applied to the Sales and Marketing functions resulting in significant increases in effectiveness and bottom line results.

A friend of mine asked a great question in response to one of my recent Lean books. His question was in essence how do you keep Lean initiatives moving ahead and not going the way of another flavour of the month program. We have all seen managers with the best intentions launch new initiatives that were supposed to be the wave of the future only to see them fizzle out after a few weeks or months. Lean initiatives are no different. Many organizations have tried Lean and either abandon it completely or don't take it very far. So what makes the difference between companies that tried Lean and those that are leading the pack?A successful launch of Lean is in some respects like getting lean with one's weight. There are no quick fixes. There are no easy solutions and it takes work. You cannot make a New Year's resolution to lose weight then go back to your old habits after a few weeks or months and expect to stay Lean. It takes discipline over the long haul.

Have you ever thought about creating your own business startup? Perhaps you are a great programmer with an idea for the next Twitter or Facebook. Maybe you have an itch you need to scratch. Or maybe you just want to learn what it feels like to be an entrepreneur.Go for it! This is a great time to build a startup, and there is no substitute for just doing it.If you are thinking about creating a startup, do your homework and learn about lean startup. Don't spend six months coding a product; prove that people want to buy it first. The most important business question is whether or not people will buy your product; so instead of building it, make a webpage with a "click here to buy" button and see if you can get people to click on it. If people click the button, then you ask for their email address to let them know when the product will be ready. If nobody clicks on it, then are you not happy that you did not build the product?

Are you losing money due to wasted effort and low productivity of your knowledge workers? Is your office inefficiency leading to low worker morale and high workforce turnover? Are you losing customers or irritated due to disorganized office practices?Applying Lean principles to your office operations can solve these problems and create efficient knowledge workers that are a real competitive advantage.Given the success that Lean Manufacturing has shown in cleaning up production processes, why not achieve a Lean Enterprise by driving Lean Office practices into the front office where inefficient procedures, paperwork and bureaucracy in one area can stall the leanest efforts of other operations.Lean is not about cutting staff and resources. Instead, it is about:¿ Focusing people's efforts creating value for the customer and eliminating waste.¿ Speeding up the operation by eliminating idle time created by paperwork and bureaucracy.

Non Executive Directors used to be caricatured as cronies of the Chairman (who is also a Non Executive Director) or CEO. Fat cats, freeloading members of the "old boy network", retirees who wanted to have somewhere to go other than the golf club for a decent lunch and a chat. Not an attractive scenario and for various reasons, but not least because of numerous serious corporate scandals where shareholders were left unprotected, the whole can of Non Executive worms has been subject to investigation, reappraisal and some rigorous new rulings. Most people have heard the term Non Executive Director without actually knowing what they are, much less what they can potentially do for a start-ups or growing business.A well chosen Non Executive director can be key to good governance but getting that first Non Executive Director appointment can be tricky.

Do you want to be the slave of your working environment, or its master?Do you want your working area to help you to do your job, or to hinder your efforts?Do you want to be rushing to complete your tasks, or have time to take pride in them?5S is a Workplace Organisation system that enables you to be the master of your work area, a work area that helps you to do your job instead of hindering you, so that you have time to take pride in your efforts. It is there to enable you to get each activity right the first time, every time.Don't get caught up in the message that 5S is a discipline of managers over workers. If you have been taught that, then the teacher didn't know what they were talking about.5S involves everyone, from directors to the guy who sweeps the floor. It benefits everyone. It depends on everyone. For the system to work, no-one can hide. Everyone has to be involved, everyone has to contribute.
