As I was putting this book together, I noticed how many times I mention or hint at gas stations. Some are obvious. Some are not. Yet so many of my interactions take place at one, making it into my writing. Perhaps I'm finally noting their impact on the everyday lives of us all. They are places of community and connection, and sometimes a place to confess. To console, and be consoled, celebrate, and to confide. Where I live, they bring people together. We know the owners and co-workers at these places. They are family and friends. The bright beacons of these stations call us in for necessities or give us a place to stretch our legs. They are places to find every type of character, in every state of mind. Building Bridges is an anthology showcasing my journey into micro poetry, featuring my previously published haiku, tanka, and tanka prose. Within its pages, I explore small moments from my own backyard and childhood, drawing inspiration from the majestic snow-covered mountains and volcanoes in the North Cascades, as well as the towering giant trees that surround me. The ever-present view of the Puget Sound, which I witness daily while teaching young students, and the rhythmic ocean waves of the Pacific blue, further contribute to the tapestry of my poetic musings. It is in those quiet moments that I find myself crafting new songs. As a dedicated teacher, I have had the privilege of instructing students across various grades, including kindergarten, second grade, third grade, and special education. Beyond the classroom, my passions extend to writing, reading, yoga, photography, and spending time outdoors with my family. In 2013, I ventured into the realm of fiction with the publication of my middle-grade novel, 'Broken Bridges.' My writing journey has also led me to contribute to the education market and share a diverse collection of poetry and short stories. Currently residing in Washington state, I am accompanied by my beautiful wife, Jaci, and our two beloved kitties. Together, we cherish moments with my two children and three stepchildren. This is my second book of original poetry. The first one, GIFTS, was published nine years ago in 2007. As I said then, I seldom (if ever) sit down to write a poem intentionally. Poems come to me out of the blue - like presents in the mail from far-off friends. I can edit and polish them, rewrapping and refining the original idea, but the real source of the inspiration is always a mysterious gift. Sometimes it comes from interactions with friends and family, other times from my religious or musical families. Sometimes it comes during trips to far-off places, and other times during quiet moments. In this book I pass along these gifts to you. I hope you enjoy them.
