  • - The Phaenomena of Aratus

    319,-

An ancient Greek guide to the heavens, translated in a new accessible modern English edition. A poetic guide to the heavens, the Phaenomena of Aratus--dating from around 270 BCE--was widely known across the ancient world, second only in fame to the works of Homer. Beginning with an invocation to Zeus, the poem describes the constellations of the northern and southern skies, the celestial sphere, and weather signs. Aratus's vivid work offered a complete handbook of astronomy, constellations, and weather, and this treatise on the night sky was later translated or adapted by luminaries including Cicero, Virgil, and Ovid. The Phaenomena remained popular throughout the Renaissance and had more than sixty printed editions by the early seventeenth century, but its notoriety has faded in the modern world. With this edition, renowned translator and amateur astronomer Stanley Lombardo renders Aratus's poem in reader-friendly vernacular English verse. Complete with endnotes, an accessible introduction, and astronomically accurate illustrations, The Sky Is Our Song brings this master poet's celebration of the sky to a twenty-first-century audience, inviting new readers to follow Aratus on a visual journey through star signs, moon phases, weather phenomena, and all wonders of the heavens.

  • - Victorian Poetry, Formalism, and the Feeling of Literary History
    av Naomi Levine
    365 - 1 319,-

A major new account of Victorian poetry and its place in the field of literary studies. The Burden of Rhyme shows how the nineteenth-century search for the origin of rhyme shaped the theory and practice of poetry. For Victorians, rhyme was not (as it was for the New Critics, and as it still is for us) a mere technique or ahistorical form. Instead, it carried vivid historical fantasies derived from early studies of world literature. Naomi Levine argues that rhyme's association with the advent of literary modernity and with a repertoire of medievalist, Italophilic, and orientalist myths about love, loss, and poetic longing made it a sensitive historiographic instrument. Victorian poets used rhyme to theorize both literary history and the most elusive effects of aesthetic form. This Victorian formalism, which insisted on the significance of origins, was a precursor and a challenge to twentieth-century methods. In uncovering the rich relationship between Victorian poetic forms and a forgotten style of literary-historical thought, The Burden of Rhyme reveals the unacknowledged influence of Victorian poetics--and its repudiation--on the development of modern literary criticism.

  • av Jonathan Thirkield
    275,-

Moving through the realms of digital technologies, these poems cut to the core of our physical human experiences amid a virtually mediated world. Diving through illusions and phantoms of virtual realms and into the human desire for boundless possibility, Infinity Pool charts the ways technologies have become embedded in our minds, bodies, and lives. Immersed in a world of data streams, neural nets, spider algorithms, and electronic terminals, Jonathan Thirkield's poems plumb the dissonances and shrinking distances between ourselves and digital technologies, imagining what becomes of the fragile machinery of the human body amid a rapidly transforming world. Thirkield turns to language as a mediator and explores infinity as a mathematical concept, a multiverse conceit, and a driver of the computational imagination. Traveling across the full spectrum of digital experience--from satellites crossing the edges of our solar system to microscopic bytes that operate beneath our perception--this collection is a testament to the future we imagine ourselves to be living through and to what happens when our escapist desires give way to the realities of birth, loss, parenthood, and sickness. Through lyrical, narrative, and formal mutations, these poems cut through a decade of exponential technological growth, landing in the reality of our corporeal experiences: the isolation of chronic illness, the daunting journeys of children growing up today, and the hope that we can remain connected to each other no matter how tenuous the ties.

Mr. Bootyhole hung a photo frame overthe wall, andcame home to find it shattered. He did not know whom or what to blame: the weight of the body of the frame;the tree it was cut from;the mud the sapling was planted in;the high definition of the picture;the printer which took forth the job of printing it;the glass embedded within;the improper making of the bricks-included, but not limited to the furnacethey were baked in, the manager, and the one whogave them shape;the frailty of the nail which held it in place;the weak blows of the hammer;its slippery grip;the paint on the wall;the humidity of the room;global warming;the lightbulb over the frame;its filament;the electricity wires running in the walls;the wind;or his own incompetence. All he knew was that he needed tofind a broom, beforehis cat injured her paws.

  • - Random Inspirational Poems of a Black Man
    av Jewel Green
    115,-

I find inspiration for my poetry from various sources - my thoughts, the world around me, and even a spiritual realm. I use my writing to express my experiences and observations, often resulting in unexpected outcomes. My third series of poems is titled "All My Uneven Edges," the first of many books that will bear this name. These poems were included initially in "Fallen Petals of a Black Rose," but I decided to retitle and divide them into shorter books. The poems in this collection are powerful and poignant, addressing many of the issues we face today. I don't write to impress others with literary style or flair. Instead, I write about what I think, feel, see, and hear, using different poetic forms such as haikus, free-form, lyric, and prose poetry. I believe my work will inspire you and move you somehow.

For those of us who don't know how to say what we feel, so we turn to art: to music, to painting, to crafts, to poetry. Our expression is limitless.Life is not linear, neither is heartbreak or healing from it. Pain comes in waves; it is calm until it isn't. Then, you are fighting for your life, trying to stay afloat or to go closer to shore. But you can only fight for so long. It can be so easy to give up. However, eventually the waves die down, and the pain gets easier to bear. This book is for those of us who feel all of this a little too much.I need to thank the people that have helped me stay afloat when I wanted to give up: thank you to my parents and brother for pushing me to write and for always pulling me back up whenever I fell. And thank you to my friends for listening to my poems and never making me feel like I was too much. I love you all.Lastly, thank you dear reader, for picking up this book. I hope it makes you feel seen because you are not alone. I feel with you, I feel for you.

In school, I argued with the literature instructor over what makes a poem "good." I can't remember who won the debate, but I rarely give up. His opinion was a "good" poem had precision and order. I advocated that a "good" poem has emotion. This is the first work I read by Steve Anc. He is a precise, literary writer who writes with emotion to the point of abandonment. His few words move you and make you feel. For me, this is what I want from poetry, an instant gratifying escape from the day. Hannah J. Brussard, Pittsburgh, PA.
