This is the first draft of A Book of Poems: Perceptions, Deceptions, Receptions, & What !?! It consists of poems written most between 2002-2008 with some older & some newer. There has been very little editing from the jotted down on paper or occasionally online which also has left them mostly without proper punctuation & grammar. This series looks at the ideas of what we face as we look out at our own world & the worlds of others. The wish is to offer some of the multifaceted views of the collective journey we are on.

Caught in the midst of our own tragic and personal hell, and just a month before the onset of our country's Covid 19 debacle, I made a decision to sit down each morning and write a poem about a memory, that is if I could remember one. And what began as an exercise to somehow save my childhood for posterity morphed into something quite different from what I first imagined it would be. Sure, a few childhood memories did crop up, but my wife's daily pain and suffering a mere fifty feet or so away from where I sat writing emphasized how connected to the present we really were. While I was hunkered down in my Florida Panhandle storage shack, she was literally almost dying nearby, trapped in our travel trailer we had called home for two years. Old and unexplained injuries, and the somehow related and accompanying neurological condition that followed, were constantly wreaking havoc in her poor brain and body, making her in ways temporarily insane. Plus our daughter was suffering in her own hell from the ravages of cancer twenty-five hundred miles away. The emotional turmoil involved in this relentless and vicious whole-body wreckage was often unbearable for all of us. And that is why my childhood memories often segued into subjects that exerted more pressing demands. The one-hundred and eight poems to follow could likely be grouped into a few segments or chapters allowing for the range of experiences from 2019 through 2022. This book of poems is now a chronologically saved recording of certain stories, or worlds, regarding some of the people who have been so alive and present in it.

Karmageitin (Karma Goat) and Gentukamarið ("A Girl's Room") are a literary pair, each having its own expression and character. They are written in two different genres, poems (Karma Goat) and a play (A Girl's Room). The works can be read in any order, and are not linearly or causally connected, but rather as two nested works, where the dialogues of the drama, the movements of the poems, the states of mind and the physical spaces, grow into each other. As the title A Girl's Room indicates, it is about a female protagonist. The same is the case in Karma Goat.Here we follow the poet as a middle-aged woman. The poems are located in the woman's home, but arise and grow out of her childhood bedroom. It is from here that the poet's perception of the world springs, and here that it is linked to the family. The room has been passed down from the aunt to the poet. A remarkable insistence is found in the movement of the poems; a longing and a desire to become part of the world, but the desire to connect is turned inside out and returns home to the girl's childhood bedroom, or the kitchen of midlife crisis; not necessarily out of a direct longing for home, but as a necessity. As soon as the poem has returned home, the poet is made invisible and exhaustion sets in, and so begins the growing of a new longing.

Included are poems addressing stressful family issues such as wayward children, divorce, addiction, or when a new perspective is needed. These poems were initially written for specific individuals and situations, but I began sharing them with others because of their universal applicability. Headings for each poem contain explanations about the challenges being faced and sometimes name the person/s for whom it was written. While no scripture quotations are given, faith in God is evident throughout. I warmly invite you to read, be comforted, and be inspired by the words God has given me.
