Inher second collection, JUMP THE GUN, Jennie Malboeuf digs deep into the hiddenrecesses of a life, exploring the stages and struggles of womanhood, the waysin which memory shapes us, and the continual fight against the darkundercurrents of grief and gun violence that shadow our daily lives in America. The speaker in thesepoems wrestles with the everyday fears and realities we often try to ignore:the complex expectationsplaced on young girls and mothers alike, the illusion of childhood innocence, and the very realconsequences of our environmental destruction.Split into twosections—with poems that layer blood-soaked images alongside close-ups of thebody and domestic life thatbloom with intimacy—this collection deftly illustrates the beauty that can befound in tragedy, thefragility of the natural world, and the resilience of the human relationshipsthat fill it.To read JUMP THE GUNis to witness yourself through the crosshairs. In Malboeuf’s words, “What hit you has become you. /Pieces of the bullet embedded / in your skin. Even / that which you come from / will never be thesame. / But from violence comes / the tides, the seasons.”

This is what comes of taking dreams / off the horizon. It is the sun / or nothing else, you would scream / if you weren't caught up in the chorus.Leaning deliberately on the imagined while scrutinizing reality and hoping for the as-yet-unseen, Unmet is a poetry collection that explores themes of frustration, justice, and thwarted rescue from a perspective that is Black-Latinx, Canadian, immigrant, and female. Drawing on a wide range of poetics, from Wallace Stevens to Tony Hoagland and Diane Seuss, roberts's musically-driven narrative surrealism confronts such timely issues as police brutality, respectability politics, intimate partner, and ecological crisis, and considers the might-have-been alongside the what could be, negotiating the past without losing hope for the future.

Moonlight glints and winks with a soft hum as girls in soft satin dresses dance around the fire. I can taste notes of empty forests and flowers smeared with blood on my tongue. Different reasons of their betrayal plague my mind. I opt to scream inward and swallow the lump in my throat. I see the candles lighting the wooden staircases of the haunted castle as I step in. The sight reminds me of when I was a child and held bears made of cotton tightly out of fear when I was left alone. I look down at my feet to see pictures of old loved ones crushed under them like worthless blossoms. Do I feel happy? Sad? Gloomy? Maybe all of them at once. I guess that's the life of a dandelion girl. The poems and pictures in this book represent the struggles I felt as an outcast and how I learned to find an exit for myself in the wonders of the world. I tried to capture the feeling of being rejected and later accepted into a new world in the poems and pictures I gathered. I hope people with similar experiences can read my book and feel a little less alone than they did before. I hope they realize things will get better. Your wings of fire will emerge.

When the Father asked, 'Do you want to write?' the invitation was presented, and the response was a resounding 'Yes!' This book offers a unique opportunity to glimpse into the Father's heart, as the author put pen to paper, often unsure of what would come forth. Within these pages, you will find solace for the lonely, hope for the longing, and comfort for those who feel forgotten. You may even discover your own story woven into the lines. At times, you will find yourself choking back tears, while at others, smiling at the victories. Yet, you will never be left without hope, just as the Father intended. Each poem takes you on a soul-stirring journey, opening up your imagination. Much like the man in the hospital who found his Savior at the very end, or the woman in the park who discovers the answer she desperately seeks, these poems offer connection and guidance. The young teenager, unsure of her path, finds the courage to step out and embrace Hope. The poems in this collection are both inspiring and encouraging. Each one is unique and timely, serving as a gentle reminder of the deep love and care the Creator has for every human being. As you spend time meditating on the lines penned herein, you will undoubtedly find yourself uplifted and enriched.

  • av Colm Toibin
    199 - 265,-

A compelling portrait of a beloved poet from one of today's most acclaimed novelistsIn this book, novelist Colm Toibin offers a deeply personal introduction to the work and life of one of his most important literary influences-the American poet Elizabeth Bishop. Ranging across her poetry, prose, letters, and biography, Toibin creates a vivid picture of Bishop while also revealing how her work has helped shape his sensibility as a novelist and how her experiences of loss and exile resonate with his own. What emerges is a compelling double portrait that will intrigue readers interested in both Bishop and Toibin. For Toibin, the secret of Bishop's emotional power is in what she leaves unsaid. Exploring Bishop's famous attention to detail, Toibin describes how Bishop is able to convey great emotion indirectly, through precise descriptions of particular settings, objects, and events. He examines how Bishop's attachment to the Nova Scotia of her childhood, despite her later life in Key West and Brazil, is related to her early loss of her parents-and how this connection finds echoes in Toibin's life as an Irish writer who has lived in Barcelona, New York, and elsewhere.Beautifully written and skillfully blending biography, literary appreciation, and descriptions of Toibin's travels to Bishop's Nova Scotia, Key West, and Brazil, On Elizabeth Bishop provides a fresh and memorable look at a beloved poet even as it gives us a window into the mind of one of today's most acclaimed novelists.

  • av Charles Simic

"It takes just one glimpse of Charles Simic's work to establish that he is a master, ruler of his own eccentric kingdom of jittery syntax and signature insight." -Los Angeles TimesFor over fifty years, Charles Simic has been widely celebrated for his brilliant and innovative poetic imagery, his sardonic wit, and a voice all his own. He has been awarded nearly every major literary prize for his poetry, including a Pulitzer and a MacArthur grant, in addition to serving as the poet laureate of the United States in 2007 and 2008.In this new volume, he distills his life's work, combining for the first time the best of his early poems with his later works--including nearly three dozen revisions--along with seventeen new, never-before-published poems. Simic's body of work draws inspiration from a range of topics, from the inscrutability of ordinary life to American blues, from folktales to marriage and war.Consistently exciting and unexpected, the nearly four hundred poems in this volume represent the best of one of America's most distinguished and original poets.
