Cambodia and Vietnam, or Asia in general awakens your physical senses, the constant noise of traffic and street sellers peddling their wares, the incredible colour of temples and the smell of incense sticks and spices. Your tongue and taste buds are in culinary heaven, divine food fusions from across the continent have been merged into regional specialities. Shoes are on and off, cold tiled floors on bare feet are one of life's simple pleasures in the heat of the day. Asia makes you wonder if you have been living numb in your day-to-day life, four months away and all our senses have been jolted and kick-started back to life. This will be the second time that we have travelled extensively around Southeast Asia, on the first occasion we visited Chiang Mai in northern Thailand, before spending a month each in both Cambodia and Vietnam. We had both been made redundant when our employer entered administration, the chance to travel was too good an opportunity to pass up. Rather than satisfying that craving we wanted more, and after working another two years in jobs that we had found unfulfilling, we gave in our notices to go backpacking once again. This time our Thailand experience will be minimal, a few nights in Bangkok following our flight before heading onto Cambodia and Siem Reap. Our plan for the rest of the Cambodian leg is to follow the same route that we covered last time, a relaxing, confidence building start as we retrace our steps around some familiar sights. On a southerly path from Siem Reap, home to the incredible Angkor Wat, a stay in Battambang splits the long trek to Phnom Penh in half. After the hectic mayhem of the Cambodian capital we will take in the riverside town of Kampot followed by the small beach resort of Kep.The last time we were in Vietnam we took the bus from Ho Chi Minh City to Cần Thơ on the Mekong Delta and then flew from there to the central region, visited Hội An and then flew out again to Hanoi. This time we are looking to take in the places that we leapfrogged over! If everything goes to plan, we should get our first ever taste of the Central Highland city of Dalat, before heading back towards the coast. Nha Trang and Quy Nhon promise two completely different beach experiences, one modern and bustling with foreign tourists and the other a more traditional low-key fishing harbour. On top of these new locations another visit to our old favourite Hội An, a well-preserved ancient town, famous for fantastic food and within cycling distance of nearby beaches and islands. On route from central Vietnam to Hanoi we intend to spend a weekend in Danang and witness the fire-breathing Dragon Bridge in full flow. The Imperial city of Huế is somewhere that we regrettably overlooked last time, travelling there by a short railway journey along the scenic coastline has been highly recommended. Ninh Binh, or Tam Cốc - we are not sure which yet - both look stunning, limestone karsts with green paddy fields and river deltas passing through. From Hanoi we plan a second visit to the hill station of Sapa set amongst stunning terraced mountains. A visit to the eastern coast will also be on the agenda - maybe a Halong Bay cruise or even a stay on one of the islands. A trip to Cao Bằng and the Bản Giốc waterfalls that straddle the border between the north of Vietnam and China should also be possible. Unfortunately, we don't ride scooters, never mind motorbikes but the mountainous scenery in that area is supposed to be breathtakingly beautiful.By the time that we return home from Hanoi we expect to have covered just over 2,800 miles, mainly by bus but with the odd rail journey thrown in for good measure. Our excitement and anticipation are interspersed with dread - flashbacks of the countless hours of blaring Cambodian karaoke shows on never-ending bus journeys that are still firmly etched in the memory from four years ago...

  • - A journey through history by road and foot - Colour edition
    av Stephen Walker
    325,-

This book is a travel story, a journey through British history, an odyssey by road and foot, beginning in Edinburgh and finishing in Gloucester, 13 days later. The journey includes walking Hadrian's Wall, visiting significant historical sites in Northern England and Wales, and hiking in remote parts of Wales. The book is a narrative journey, accompanied by photographs that explore two millennia of British history. It begins with the Roman occupation of the island, the original British Kingdoms that emerged from the departure of Rome 400 years later, and their eventual demise at the hands of the Angles and Saxons. It explores the events that led to the birth of England, and the emergence of the Welsh and then British nations. It travels through historic sites including Iron Age hillforts, Roman forts, neolithic standing stones, significant battlefields, and historic churches. It tells stories of the history of each of these places, and the epic poems of the people who built them, lived in them and fought over them. Much of Britain's remaining history resides in its churches, abbeys and cathedrals, and for that reason, this book focuses on the history, architecture and stories that can be found in these ancient buildings. The author hopes that this story will inspire others to make journeys through the history of their nations.

  • - Meeting up with my online Friends in Glendalough, Bantry and Dublin
    av Dorothea Chan
    759,-

In August 2022 I came across a post on Facebook, where they had a zoom session on the occasion of Lions Gate. I took part in it and found the energy quite uplifting! Also a lot of these members of Star Tribes of Light can speak light language. I found it quite amusing to listen to them. A lot of them live in Ireland. Now I kept looking for a retreat for spiritual advancement. I was notified of one happening in Ireland and I decided to take part in it. It took place in Glendalough Sanctuary quite close to Dublin. Here is how Wikipedia describes Glendalough: Glendalough is a glacial valley in County Wicklow, Ireland, renowned for an Early Medieval monastic settlement founded in the 6th century by St Kevin. From 1825 to 1957, the head of the Glendalough Valley was the site of a galena lead mine. Glendalough is also a recreational area for picnics, for walking along networks of maintained trails of varying difficulty, and also for rock-climbing. I arrived in Dublin on April 27th 2023 and took the bus for some distance and then got picked up by Susanne from the Glendalough Sanctuary. Susanne is a very nice lady born in Germany but living in Ireland for decades. The yellow blooming bushes called Furze impressed me, decorating the landscape. On our way to the Sanctuary we stopped in Roundwood to get some groceries. I stayed alone in a big apartment for most of the time. Later on one lady also had a room there. During the following week I explored the neighborhood and the lake area. Also, every day we had meditation in the morning, led by the missionary priest Michael. He is a gentle soul. So is the golden retriever called Alainn, a very quiet beautiful dog! He always took part in the meditation! There are lots of sheep in Ireland and it is very green. I found some cute gifts to take home. Sister Breda (she is a very sweet person) and Michael took me along to visit the National Botanic Gardens in Kilmacurragh. I enjoyed nature in its bloom (Rhododendron trees) and those beautiful trees (monkey puzzle tree). Michael new a lot to tell about this park, since he has been there many times I presume. I guess I came at the right time, in spring, when every thing is blooming. I also visited Mount Ushers Garden which was blooming as well and Wicklow town to see the Ocean. Next I visited Bantry by bus. Actually my online friend picked me up in Cork and gave me a ride to Bantry. In the next few days she showed me all the ancient sites as well as the bamboo park and the Glengarriff Woods and Nature Reserve. Bantry (Irish: Beanntraí, meaning '(place of) Beann's people') is a town in the civil parish of Kilmocomoge in the barony of Bantry on the southwest coast of County Cork, Ireland. It lies in West Cork at the head of Bantry Bay, a deep-water gulf extending for 30 km (19 mi) to the west. The Beara Peninsula is to the northwest, with Sheep's Head peninsula to the southwest. (Wikipedia). Donna joined us and we visited Gougane Barra. The name Guagán Barra comes from Saint Finnbarr (or Barra), who is said to have built a monastery on the island in the lake during the sixth century. The present ruins of a hermitage date from around 1700 when a priest called Denis O'Mahony retreated to the island.[ (Wikipedia) After four days we travelled back to Glendalough and took part in a weekend retreat. On the 15th of May we were off to Dublin and in the afternoon went on a Viking Tour. It was a bit a chilly day and luckily I had my coat with me to keep me warm. The Tour car transformed into a boat which was quite special! The next morning we left for the airport by taxi at 6 am! I wish you lots of fun with this book!

I've taken photographs of everything under the sun over the past three decades. My specialties are sunsets and flowers, and spring and autumn. I concentrate on these two main areas: The Niagara Peninsula and the Christian campground, Fair Havens, near Orillia. Recently, I decided to create a collection of some of the best from all these categories. It was a undertaking of happy reminiscences, a good way to celebrate my photographic achievements from the past, over the past number of decades. From the Niagara Peninsula I included pretty photos of spring and autumn, as well as flowers and sunsets. I've produced photobooks in the past of Morningstar Mill, Port Dalhousie, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Niagara Falls, Ball's Falls and the Bruce Trail. What makes this new book unique is that I included some of my poetry in among my pretty photos. I suppose it's not only a collection of some of my best pictures but also a preservation. I hope you enjoy the result. Happy looking and happy reading.
