THE Fates were unkind to the Balkan Peninsula. Because of its position, it was forced to stand in the path of the greatest racial movements of the world, and was thus the scene of savage racial struggles, and the depositary of residual shreds of nations surviving from great defeats or Pyrrhic victories and cherishing irreconcilable mutual hatreds. As if that were not enough of ill fortune imposed by geographical position, the great Roman Empire elected to come from its seat in the Italian Peninsula to die in the Balkan Peninsula, a long drawn-out death of many agonies, of many bloody disasters and desperate retrievals. For all the centuries of which history knows a blood-mist has hung over the Balkans; and for the centuries before the dawn of written history one may surmise that there was the same constant struggle of warring races.

We have progressed appreciably beyond the days of the old horseless carriage, which, it will be remembered, retained even the dashboard. To-day the modern automobile somewhat resembles, in its outlines, across between a decapod locomotive and a steam fire-engine, or at least something concerning the artistic appearance of which the layman has very grave doubts. The control of a restive horse, a cranky boat, or even a trolley-car on rails is difficult enough for the inexperienced, and there are many who would quail before making the attempt; but to the novice in charge of an automobile, some serious damage is likely enough to occur within an incredibly short space of time, particularly if he does not take into account the tremendous force and power which he controls merely by the moving of a tiny lever, or by the depressing of a pedal.

"McNeil's deeply felt observations offer a transporting, thought-provoking lens on nature. It's captivating stuff." Publishers Weekly"Meditative and sumptuous… Latitudes is a rich, textured portrait of the natural world and a plaintive reflection on the destruction of climate change." Foreword Reviews"Full of lived experience, this book ponders the question of our own animal relationship with the planet, between what we know and what we feel, between mind and body, instinct and intellect." Julia Bell, author of Massive and Hymnal"Her shimmering prose brings into sharp focus the beauty of the remote places where we can glimpse – and sometimes hear – what our planet was like before us. And what it might be in the silence that will come after the frenzy of human dominance." Margie OrfordRelating thirty years of living in and writing about some of the world's last remaining wild places, Latitudes is a thrilling and thought-provoking exploration of a changing planet. At once memoir, journal and travelogue of Earth's wildernesses, Latitudes ranges across the Antarctic, the Arctic, the savannahs and deserts of Africa, the Southern and Atlantic oceans and the boreal forests of Canada.Latitudes is a powerful, innovative book of creative non-fiction that tracks one writer's life-long experience of reckoning with an age of dramatic ecological loss. It shows us the importance of listening to the living world that is speaking to us, if we open ourselves to hear its voice.

  • - A Year Through South America
    av Thiago Fantinatti
    199,-

"If a man confidently follows his dreams and strives to live the life he imagined, he will have unexpected success in ordinary moments." (H. D. Thoreau, Walden or Life in the Woods, Chap. 18). Thiago Fantinatti dreamed of exploring the vast South American continent on two wheels, independently and without haste. He wanted to travel from the Atlantic to the Pacific, from the Pampas to the Atacama, from the Andes to the Amazon... One year later, having pedaled over 15,000 km, he had achieved his dream! In "Long Ride South", the intrepid traveler not only recounts his great adventure but also allows himself to be carried away by memories and notes. It's not easy to observe oneself, let alone put into words what one has glimpsed. But here, with honesty and simplicity, the author narrates moments, people, and places, as well as reflecting on his own condition as a living being, willing to learn, climb, explore, and influence the quality of his own and others' lives he met along the way. Sometimes, it seems necessary to step back, take risks, and go after the unknown to change. That's how it is with dreams: to achieve them, one must take the leap. This is what Thiago did when he set off on his bike, and what he did when he wrote this book, which, besides being a formidable account of his feat, also serves as a guide and inspiration for other dreamers. "I increasingly felt that I was actually realizing my dream and increasingly thought about the sequence of events that made all of this become a reality." (Chap. 1).

  • - The 1950's worldwide in the Merchant Navy
    av Alan Rawlinson
    179,-

Round the world voyages back in the 1950's when the stay in exotic and not so exotic ports could be weeks or even months. The voyages detail trips ashore and events at sea way back when it was the sun and stars that guided progress. THe ships still had wood decks, and open rails, and life was not so frenetic as today. The Captains were still 'God' in their little world, and not harangued from Head Office on a minute by minute bsis as happens today. The only communication was by the ' Sparkies' morse key, both of which have regretfully disappeared. The voyages which in this company were a mixture of Liner and Tramping trades could be for 2 years, and often were. A typical voyage might include two or more trips round the world, and taking in both Pananma and the Suez Canal. The author sailed as an Apprentice and then a deck officer, immensely enjoying both the navigation, and the beauty and variety of the natural world. Discipline on board was tight, but it was a happy time which has now gone forever in commercial vessels that work rapidly with a minimum stay in port.
