Named one of the best books of 2021 by NPRNew York Times Bestseller and a New York Times Book Review Editor's Choice pick?Masterly . . .represents an extraordinary achievement: It is comprehensive and detailed without being tedious, practical without being banal, impeccably well judged and unusually rigorous.??Daniel Markovits, New York Times Book Review?Ron Lieber is a gift.??Scott Galloway The hugely popular New York Times Your Money columnist and author of the bestselling The Opposite of Spoiled offers a deeply reported and emotionally honest approach to the biggest financial decision families will ever make: what to pay for college?a decision made even more confusing because of the Covid-19 pandemic.Sending a teenager to a flagship state university for four years of on-campus living costs more than $100,000 in many parts of the United States. Meanwhile, many families of freshmen attending selective private colleges will spend triple?over $300,000. With the same passion, smarts, and humor that infuse his personal finance column, Ron Lieber offers a much-needed roadmap to help families navigate this difficult and often confusing journey. Lieber begins by explaining who pays what and why and how the financial aid system got so complicated. He also pulls the curtain back on merit aid, an entirely new form of discounting that most colleges now use to compete with peers. While price is essential, value is paramount. So what is worth paying extra for, and how do you know when it exists in abundance at any particular school? Is a small college better than a big one? Who actually does the teaching? Given that every college claims to have reinvented its career center, who should we actually believe? He asks the tough questions of college presidents and financial aid gatekeepers that parents don't know (or are afraid) to ask and summarizes the research about what matters and what doesn't.Finally, Lieber calmly walks families through the process of setting financial goals, explaining the system to their children and figuring out the right ways to save, borrow, and bargain for a better deal. The Price You Pay for College gives parents the clarity they need to make informed choices and helps restore the joy and wonder the college experience is supposed to represent.

What is ninkatsu? Who promotes and governs this "active pursuit of pregnancy?" Trying to answer these questions, this unprecedented publication exhibits how mass media, policymakers, and biomedical science-corporate capitalism govern the individual's reproductive choices in contemporary Japan through gendered discourses of self-improvement, life planning, and biomedical technology. Analyzing a broad range of media, popular science, and government material, it links historical and social processes with an original theoretical framework on self-governance, neoliberalism, and postfeminism. While deeply engaging with Japanese sources, this rich scholarship takes the study of reproductive politics beyond Japan. This book is not only of interest for Japanese studies scholars but more broadly also those curious about neoliberal government strategies, gender, and biomedical capitalism.

For the longest time I was Dad 1.0. After four children, I thought I had it figured out and it was my way or the highway. However, through a series of tumultuous life events I came to realize I did not have it figured out and I needed to change. These life events humbled me and showed me the need to move from Dad 1.0 to Dad 2.0.In other words this old dog needed to learn new tricks. I needed to iterate my approach to being a father. Especially since my children were moving quickly into adulthood. If I was not careful, thoughtful and humble - I ran the risk of alienating my children and creating rifts that would be very difficult to heal. I found that being teachable and having the ability to iterate is one of the key skills needed to succeed in life. This is true in business and it is true with my family and personal pursuits as well. The Dad 2.0 process has led me to make a number of different and sometimes difficult changes in my approach to being a father. I realize when you see some of the changes I have made your reaction will most likely be - "well duh! That's obvious". While it may be obvious, it is not enough to know what to do; you have to be intentional and actually make the changes. You have to be proactive and thoughtful. To be clear - I AM NOT PERFECT! I will never be perfect. I have flaws and foibles and will forever be striving to be a better father. It is in the striving that I hope to effect positive change in my life and the lives of my children. My goal is to finish well! I know this will be a life long journey. You will note that everything in this book is focused on what you need to do to change! Believe it or not, you can only really change one person in this life - yourself. Certainly you have influence, and can lead, guide and direct others, but you can only change yourself. Because change comes from within! If you want to change someone else, then pray for them and ask God to change them. You should spend your time, energy and effort on changing yourself. I have intentionally kept this book short and simple. We live in a stressed world where time is our most precious commodity and a long and lengthy book will most likely gather dust and never be read.I hope you find this book helpful in your own journey to be a better father. Just remember this journey is a marathon and not a sprint and the journey will only end when you take your last breath. I will strive each day to finish well and I hope you will do the same.

Mothers are powerful women. They are the keepers of the past, the present, and the future, yet many have been raised to stay quiet, seek outside validation, and wait for permission slips. The result? A generation of mothers who feel alone, less than, and more disconnected from their true self than ever before. Exploring the way motherhood rips you open spiritually, Dear Luna Wilde... honors the raw yet beautiful journey of one of life's biggest responsibilities. Through over two and a half years worth of letters to her young daughter, Leena Lemos reminds mothers of their truth while opening the conversation to the profound intersection of motherhood and soul discovery. FROM DEAR LUNA WILDE..."I believe letters are the most honest way to communicate because they travel in a direct line from heart to hand to paper. This book is my heart song for any mother who is ready to lead with light and own the depths of the responsibility she's been given."

On a frigid January night, one knock on his door turned his life upside down. But the seizure of his four year old daughter, from the only home she's known, was just the start in a one and a half year battle with DHS, its agencies, and the Juvenile Family Court system.Envision the father sixty-one, non married and your name is not on the birth certificate. Add abuse allegations and calculate the odds of recapturing your daughter. The descriptive, wrenching anguish he shares throughout the narrative, gives insight into the impact the State's savagery has on families. With each passing encounter, the bias, notably age and gender escalates. False allegations presumed as fact. Social workers not following basic protocol. State's attorneys objecting without reasons, and a Judge issuing a court order leaving explanations blank.Forced to retire, the former Teacher provides a colorful and unadulterated glimpse into his thoughts of each person and agency he engages with.Is it possible his daughter's Guardian Ad Litem (GAL), whose job is to advocate in the child's best interest, investigate the parties of the case, make home visits, compile reports and give recommendations, has never spoken to the father? The father who has appeared and even sat next to the GAL, at Family team meetings, disposition and progress hearings, for over one year. Not one word was ever exchanged...Is it possible to legally keep a father, who spent every night for over four years with his daughter, from talking or seeing her for seventy days? A father with no criminal record to the case, and drops clean UA's? Yes, in this disturbing calamity anything is possible.

The purpose of this book is show how research on families can be used to offer inspiration, suggestions, and guidance to intercultural families choosing to school their children in the regular Japanese school system. Each chapter is written by a parent or parents who are themselves researchers and thus bring their skills to the task of writing about issues which have affected their families, and are likely to affect other families in similar ways. There are also suggestions for other non-Japanese parents coping with similar issues. The book is divided into three sections: The first, "Finding our own way", deals with children's and parents' struggles with identity and inclusion in Japanese schools and society. The second, "Dealing with the Japanese school system", offers narratives and advice on such topics as coping with homework and dealing with more than one school system, as well as what government-accredited Japanese overseas schools have to offer. The third section, "Coping with challenges", examines the experiences of families where children are "different" because they have physical or intellectual challenges, or live with foster or adoptive families. The book concludes with a narrative about a family who made the decision to remove their children from the Japanese system entirely and send them abroad for schooling. The authors of the chapters in this book are all current or former university faculty, living in different areas of Japan. Some, who live in highly-populated urban areas, have had ample opportunities to locate educational options for their children, while others, living in rural communities, have had to struggle to advocate for their children's inclusion in mainstream classes. Their stories are all compelling and their advice is certain to be helpful to those planning to or already raising children in Japan. This book will also be of value to researchers and educators, particularly those with an interest in bilingualism, intercultural families, and cross-cultural issues, along with anyone wishing to learn more about contemporary Japanese society.
