This book is an oral history of the punk scene in Belfast from the mid-1970s to the mid-80s. It explores what it was like to be a punk in a city shaped by the violence of the Troubles, and how this differed from being a punk elsewhere. It also asks what it means to have been a punk - how punk unravels as a thread throughout the lives of the people interviewed, and what that unravelling means in the context of post-peace-process Northern Ireland. In doing so, it suggests a critical understanding of sectarianism, subjectivity and memory politics in the North, and argues for the importance of placing punk within the segregated structures of everyday life described by the interviewees. Belfast punk and the Troubles is an intervention in Northern Irish historiography stressing the importance of history from below, and will be compelling reading for historians of Ireland and of punk, as well as those interested in innovative approaches to oral history.

Between 1937 and 1940 fieldworkers in the Works Progress Administration's Federal Writers' Project interviewed around 3,500 formerly enslaved people in North America, resulting in roughly 20,000 pages of still unedited and inadequately indexed typescript. These accounts--the WPA ex-slave narratives--are the most substantial collection by far of folklore and oral history gathered directly from enslaved people in America. It is arguably the single greatest body of African American folklore extant, and a significant portion is devoted to folk music and song. This book considers this treasure trove in all its relevant social, cultural, and historical contexts. Nineteenth-century Black folk music developed against the backdrop of North American slavery, the American Civil War, Emancipation, the Federal occupation of the South, and a successful white supremacist paramilitary and political insurgency that led to Federal withdrawal, officially sanctioned racial terror, and Southern apartheid. The WPA ex-slave narratives describe that history in remarkable detail. Despite their inestimable value, most of the ex-slave narratives remained unpublished until the late 1970s, being almost unknown except to folklorists. Even after publication, the collection's sheer size was a barrier. Quoting extensively from the narratives and exhaustively annotated and indexed, this volume provides readers with detailed explanations and full references for every musical item or tradition featured in the ex-slave narratives. John Minton covers instrumental music and social dancing, spirituals and hymns, singing games and lullabies, ring plays and reels, worksongs, minstrel songs, ballads, war songs, slavery laments, and much, much more. Written for both specialists and general readers, with 134 illustrations, the book also offers a general overview of the ex-slave narratives, their contents, creation, and relation to the field of African American folklore as a whole.

Only Easy Music for Baritone Ukulele is full of exactly that! The 41 pieces herein are easy. You'll find popular classical melodies and favorite folk tunes from various traditions, all presented in simple textures and in keys that are comfortable to play on the baritone ukulele. The music is notated in both tablature and standard music notation. A glossary, notation guide and chord fingering diagrams are provided. Most of the tunes in this volume are solo melodies, and can be played either with a pick or with the fingers of your right hand. Chords for an accompanist (and lyrics) are sometimes included. A few of the pieces are arranged in a simple two-voice fingerstyle or classical texture. The bass lines are mostly open string notes, so they add a fuller sound without complicating the job of the left hand. A handful of tunes in this book come from the the first few pages of "Music for Baritone Ukulele" or 'More Music for Baritone Ukulele" by the same author. There are also a few pieces presented here that are treated to more complex arrangements in one of the other two books. These songs are intended to support my book The Art Of Accompaniment On The Guitar. You don't need to have that book but it will help you both to play these songs and to undestand the style of the accompaniments. I have chosen songs that are out of copyright as it is then possible to publish them in book from without complex negotiations with copyright holders. You can find all my copyright arrangements on Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct and I have added a selection of these in Appendix 1.The idea behind this book was to give a number of songs that can be played effectively with what has been learnt in Volume 1 and that are also easy to sing. The songs are intended for the acoustic guitar and use finger style not a plectrum. They could however be played on an electric guitar using picking if you so desired eg Jeff Buckley's version of Leonrad Cohen's famous song Alleluia.

I present my written works as those which disturb the margins of socio-political power and hegemony, to dismantle the hermeneutics, epistemologies and dynamic lexicons of oppression and cultural suppression. This decision advances my movement toward authoring works which situate and re-read pop cultural ideologies and aesthetic assumptions with a philosophical deconstructive expressive critique. My current and forthcomings works argue for the necessity and strategic representation of my voice as deconstructionist, a pop cultural aesthetic critic and an ideologue writing to establish and fortify new avenues of scholarship and aesthetic criticism.

I began this project after thinking that some tunes in the Irish tradition do not always get a chance to tell their story. Often many tunes don't even have a name - gan ainm - or it has been forgotten or are referred to as 'do you know this one?' or 'what do you call that one?' I asked my friends to suggest fifty random tune titles which came from the tradition already or were ones they had thought of themselves for a self composed tune. I decided then that the title of the tune could lead me anywhere; I would not necessarily bind myself to what that the tune's title may suggest. However, I did research some of the older tunes and their origin stories and some intrigued me so much I used those. For the original tunes I agreed that if the writer was happy to give me their inspiration for the tune I would stick reasonably close to that story. In short order I had my volunteers both old and new. What follows is the culmination of a lifetime in Irish Traditional Music and several months wondering why I ever started this madness in the first place! The poems come in various shapes and sizes and hopefully a wide range of emotions are to be found within. I strongly encourage you to read them aloud in a crowded room with a glass of something to keep you warm. I dedicate this work to my wife, Catherine and our children, Katie and Tóla. Investigates the reception and performance history of the polyphonic mass in Lutheran Central Europe from ca. 1540-1600. The five-movement polyphonic Mass Ordinary emerged from the cultural and liturgical practices of medieval Roman Catholicism and became the pre-eminent large-scale musical genre of early modern Europe. By the end of the sixteenth century, the polyphonic mass remained a core musical genre among Catholics despite gaining widespread popularity within a new institution fundamentally opposed to the Catholic Church and best known for its cultivation of vernacular liturgical music: the Lutheran church. This book investigates the reception and performance history of the polyphonic mass in Lutheran Central Europe from ca. 1540-1600. Through careful source analysis, this study presents examples of polyphonic masses composed in both Lutheran and Catholic contexts that contradict the conventional conception of the Mass Ordinary as a fixed five-movement cycle with unaltered Latin texts. The book draws on sixteenth-century liturgical documents such as Lutheran church orders and hundreds of primary printed and manuscript sources of polyphonic masses; some of these items are well-known in Renaissance musicology source studies while others have received little to no scholarly attention. The book's findings invite reconsideration of how the Mass Ordinary genre is defined, allow for a discussion whether the polyphonic mass should be considered a bi-confessional genre, and present a cohesive examination of early modern liturgical music in the Germanic and western Slavic regions. It offers interesting reading to scholars and students of European Renaissance and religious music, as well as Reformation studies more generally.
