"Travelogue: Greek everyday solutions to common problems" is a book years in the making. Stemming from the project "DIY: who's the designer?" by the same editors, this publication serves as a visual journey into the spontaneous DIY culture throughout Greece and explores the connection between design as a practice and the artefacts made by anonymous individual creators. Papairlines are a team of designers with an applied interest in how ideas are born. They began photographing objects by unknown creators before 2012, mainly to satisfy their own curiosity as to how non-designers act creatively, composing solutions to problems and needs while filling in design omissions uncatered for by the existing infrastructure and equipment. As the team's thoughts on "DIY: Who's the designer?" matured and their personal photographic collection grew, conversations around every newfound photo provoked the desire to involve more contributors in the project. To the question "What ingenious objects might exist in Greece that have been created by DIY designers?", the team responded with an open call to professional and amateur photographers asking for images from all over the country. The responses brought invaluable fresh information and interesting objects from distant and remote locations. The photographs found in the book are contributions from different parts of Greece, by photographers who are not necessarily the object creators, but successfully capture the essence of these artefacts. Papairlines are the first no-budget airlines founded in 2011 by Vasso Asfi, Costas Bissas and Loukas Angelou between Athens and London. Operating "design flights", papairlines use travel as a metaphor to draw connections between aesthetics and usability, process and result, stereotype and evolution, behaviour and emotion.

Blending documentary and conceptual photography, de Middel's account of migrants traveling to California brings the plight of immigration into harsh reliefCristina de Middel (born 1975), the first Spanish head of Magnum Photos, has been traveling for years with Mexican migrants on the train they call "the beast" interviewing sicarios (hired killers) and talking for hours with "coyotes" (clandestine smugglers) and police officers. She combines her own photographs with objects found in the desert and archival footage, creating a multi-layered narrative that evokes the hardships and dangers of searching for a better life. The journey begins in Tapachula, a city on the southern border of Mexico with Guatemala, and ends in Felicity, a small town in California dubbed the "Center of the World." This saga is punctuated by the accounts of three migrants recounting their crossing, as well as a commentary by the artist. An afterword by Mexican journalist Pedro Anza illuminates the issues at stake and the human consequences of the United States' obsession with closing its borders.

When Caroline Furneaux's father Colin died suddenly in 2011, she discovered an archive of 35mm slides that he had shot during the 1960s. They were a beguiling series of beautiful women photographed in idyllic locations, mostly in Sweden. It was during this time that he had first met Caroline's Swedish mother, Barbro, yet none of the photographs were of her. Who were they all? For Furneaux these girlfriends evoked off-duty film stars from a bygone era. They were everyday goddesses encapsulating the essence of Scandinavian summers and youth: short and intensely sweet. Sleuth-like, Furneaux scoured the photographs for clues to who the women might be and how her father might have met them. She showed them to his brother and her mother, but they didn't recognise any of them. As the work progressed, however, she realised that what she was really trying to unlock was the identity of this young man, and the complex father he would become. By some miracle of light and time, these magnificent strangers had connected her with this insouciant version of her father, and given their relationship a new life. Caroline Furneaux is a photographer and writer based in London. Images from The Mothers I Might Have Had have been shown at FORMAT International Photography Festival and featured in magazines including the RPS Journal of Contemporary Photography. This is Furneaux's first book.
