Il volume nasce in occasione della mostra Letizia Battaglia, Fotografia come scelta di vita, (Venezia, Casa dei Tre Oci), un volume antologico che raccoglie ben 300 scatti, molti dei quali inediti, provenienti dall¿archivio storico della grande fotografa, con l¿intento di raccontare un¿artista, una donna e una vita. Letizia Battaglia è riconosciuta come una delle figure più importanti della fotografia contemporanea non solo per i suoi scatti saldamente presenti nell¿immaginario collettivo, ma soprattutto per il valore civile ed etico da lei attribuito al fare fotografia. Nel catalogo oltre al saggio introduttivo della curatrice Francesca Alfano Miglietti, sono presenti interventi di noti personaggi quali il sindaco di Palermo Leoluca Orlando, Filippo La Mantia, e il fotografo Paolo Ventura. Un saggio di Maria Chiara Di Trapani racconta inoltre la vita nell¿archivio della fotografa. Si presenta una Letizia Battaglia inedita, fotografa di mafia ma anche della bellezza: dagli omicidi di piazza a Milano negli anni settanta agli animali, le coppie, i baci; l¿inconsapevole eleganza delle bambine del quartiere Cala a Palermo; le processioni religiose, lo scempio delle coste siciliane, i volti di Giovanni Falcone, Pier Paolo Pasolini e di tante donne nelle quali la fotografa si rispecchia. Nel volume si documentano inoltre l¿impegno politico, l¿attività editoriale, quella teatrale e cinematografica e la recente istituzione del Centro internazionale di fotografia a Palermo.
