  • av John Alinder
    559,-

John Alinder, son of a farmer, was born in 1878 in the village of Savasta, in Uppland, a province in eastern central Sweden. He remained in the village all his life. He chose not to take over his parents'' farm, instead becoming a self-taught photographer and jack of all trades. He was a music lover, holder of the Swedish agency for the British record label and gramophone brand His Master''s Voice. For a time he ran a shop from his home, and he even operated an illicit bar. From the 1910s to the 1930s he portrayed local people, the surrounding landscape and their way of life. His portraits are extraordinary - children placed on chairs, old ladies, people perched in trees, labourers and confirmation candidates; often depicted against a background of foliage and sprawling greenery penetrated by sunlight. The Alinder collection was ''discovered'' in the 1980s when a curator found over 8,000 glass plates stacked away in a library basement.

  • - The Strange and Enchanted Life of Isidore Isou
    av Andrew Hussey
    329,-

A vibrant account of both the sensuous cultural scene of postwar Paris and the life of an alluring icon of modern art. Isidore Isou was a young Jew in wartime Bucharest who barely survived the Romanian Holocaust. He made his way to Paris, where, in 1945, he founded the avant-garde movement Lettrism, described as the missing link between Dada, Surrealism, Situationism, and May '68. In Speaking East, Andrew Hussey presents a colorful picture of the postwar Left Bank, where Lettrist fists flew in avantgarde punch-ups in Jazz clubs and cafés, and where Isou--as sexy and as charismatic as the young Elvis--gathered around him a group of hooligan disciples who argued, drank, and had sex with the Parisian intellectual élite. This is a vibrant account of the life and times of a pivotal figure in the history of modern art.

  • av WILLIAM MULAN
    139,-

Upon closer inspection, inconspicuous things that are frequently taken for granted tend to reveal a whole universe of fascinating details and unusual features. You just have to have the right eye for them. This is absolutely the case with William Mullan. His encounter with the varying appearances of an Egremont Russet apple gave him a taste for it. Since then, he has explored the vast range of apple varieties, capturing their individual charms in loving, stylishly elegant portraits. It is precisely this odd charm combined with the hitherto unknown that make these photographs fascinating studies of a supposedly commonplace fruit. Mullan confides completely in their idiosyncratic aesthetics and invites us in this attractive gift book to embark on a visual expedition into the world of the apple.New Yorker WILLIAM MULLAN (*1989) came to photography as an autodidact and his talent was quickly recognized. His Odd Apple project developed into an influential and much talked-about series (for example in The New Yorker and i-D Magazine) that soon gained widespread attention.
