New printing - with new introduction by Duro Olowu - of this definitive study and essential guide to Jamaican Dancehall in the 1980s featuring hundreds of exclusive photographs with accompanying text, interviews and biographies. ---------- 'Lesser¿s book is a vibrant anthology of all that mattered; the soundsystems, singers, producers, singers and deejays' The Guardian 'This superb book of Beth Lesser¿s photographs, supplemented by her emphatic text and wonderful candid interviews with many of the main players gives us a unique view straight to the heart of dancehall reggae.' - Steve Barrow, author of The Rough Trade Guide to Reggae 'This book features Dancehall and all its luminaries, with a back-drop of bass bins, heat-hazed colour and excellent knitwear, plus interviews, biographies and diversions into the music¿s development.' - MOJO ---------- This book captures a previously unseen era of musical culture fashion and lifestyle. With unprecedented access to the incredibly vibrant music scene during this period, Beth Lesser¿s photographs are a unique way into a previously hidden part of Jamaican culture. Dancehall is at the centre of Jamaican musical and cultural life. From its roots in Kingston in the 1950s to its heyday in the 1980s, Dancehall has conquered the globe also spreading to the USA, UK, Canada, Japan, Europe and beyond. Dancehall is a culture that encompasses music, fashion, drugs, guns, art, community, technology, and more. Many of today¿s music and fashion styles can be traced back to Dancehall culture and continue to be influenced by it today. Born in the 1950s out of the neighbourhood soundsystems of Kingston, Dancehall grew to its height in the 1980s before a massive influx of drugs and guns made the scene too dangerous for many. Dancehall is an essential reference book for anyone interested in Reggae, as well as a unique photographic and textual source book of the musical, cultural and political life of Jamaica. In the early 1980s as Jamaica was in the throws of political and gang violence Beth Lesser ventured where few other dared and this book is never before seen record of the exciting, dangerous and vibrant world of Dancehall. Beth Lesser¿s book tells this story from its roots to its heights. Living in Jamaica in the late 70s and early 80s she photographed and documented a cultural explosion as producers, singers, DJs and soundsystems who all made a living out of the slums of Kingston.

Addressing the relationship between law and the visual, this book examines the importance of photography in Central, East, and Southeast European show trials. The dispensation of justice during communist rule in Albania, East Germany, and Poland was reliant on legal propaganda, making the visual a fundamental part of the legitimacy of the law. Analysing photographs of trials, this book examines how this message was conveyed to audiences watching and participating in the spectacle of show trials. The book traces how this use of the visual was exported from the Soviet Union and imposed upon its satellite states in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War. It shows how the legal actors and political authorities embraced new photographic technologies to advance their legal propaganda and legal photography. Drawing on contemporary theoretical work in the area, the book then challenges straightforward accounts of the relationship between law and the visual, critically engaging entrenched legal historical narratives, in relation to three different protagonists, to offer the possibility of reclaiming and rewriting past accounts. As its analysis demonstrates, the power of images can also be subversive; and, as such, the cases it addresses contribute to the discourse on visual epistemology and open onto contemporary questions about law and its inherent performativity. This original and insightful engagement with the relationship between law and the visual will appeal to legal and cultural theorists, as well as those with more specific interests in Stalinism, and in Central, East, and Southeast European history.

Art and photography have played a key role in capturing and reflecting on the conditions for the Brexit referendum. Illustrated by a range of work by artists including Cornelia Parker, Wolfgang Tillmans, David Shrigley, Tacita Dean and Jeremy Deller as well as the satirists Cold War Steve and Led By Donkeys, who offer fascinating insights into their work, along with ephemera such as campaign posters and leaflets, and more personal photographs which capture the searing impact of the vote on both UK and EU citizens, this impassioned and compelling book explores the role of the photograph and sometimes moving image in the ongoing consequences of what the author views as a political cataclysm. From Jeremy Deller's film of musicians protesting outside the House of Commons and Mark Duffy's extraordinary photograph of a debate held inside, to portraits of those whose lives have been changed immeasurably, this art of protest brings together disparate aspects of the bitterly fought battle to remain and the consequences of the decision to leave the EU on 1 January 2021 and serves as a reminder of this political and social schism. In doing so, the book offers insight into our society, exploring issues of national identity, migration, colonialism/decolonialism, racism, the flag, austerity, the border in Northern Ireland, Scotland and how artists can intervene in political debate. It offers an original, visually stimulating and attractive examination of this still topical subject, revealing how art and photography can capture and memorialise key moments in our history.

Cappellificio Cervo is to the world of millinery what the analog camera is to the world of photography: a place of return to fine art and inimitable craftsmanship. It is the artistic integrity of this historic institution dating back to 1897, that photographer Giovanni Previdi has documented so beautifully in How to Make a Hat.

Maya Art's work explores themes of femininity, religious syncretism and cultural diversity. In 2017, she spent a year in the Afro-Mexican village of Costa Chica. Oaxaca, in the home of Juliana, a lawyer and her teenage daughter, Veronica. It was Juliana who introduced her to the women of the community - healers, midwives, widows, single mothers and mothers with many children. They live relatively separately from men due to a local history of violence but the life of community revolves around them. The village is steeped in magic, hidden energies and secrets. Traditional medicine and healing and healing techniques such as espanto (soul cleansing) or empacho (healing) abound. The work explores three key themes - the anthropology of Afro-Mexican villages, the coming together of Catholic and African spirituality and the place of women in society. For Maya it is also a form of autobiography in which her own multicultural background is reflected and she chose mixed media collage and painting on photographs to reflect her experiences of the village This book is the result of a maquette made during a workshop directed by Ana Casas and Ramon Pez at the invitation of Hydra, an art gallery and art gallery and publishing house based in Mexico City. The project received the Dummy Book Award at the Rencontres d'Arles 2022.

Traipsing along the river bottoms of the Current River over and around the log drifts to follow the herd (about twelve) Missouri wild horses (especially the Little Shawnee Creek and the Rocky Creek herds) with most of my time about evenly spent in Carter County with the Rocky Creek herd (the most spirited herd of the four herds). After many months, over two years, I was able to become more adept at their movements; but still the herds at times were skittish. Most of my photos of the Rocky Creek herd were taken within Carter County near Stegall Mountain, and its indigenous glades ablaze with many varieties of wild flowers, where the Collard lizards, Black bears, Eagles, Hawks, Bobcats, Deer, Elk, Mountain Lions, Wild Pigs, Snakes, and numerous small animals and birds roam near Shannon County's Klepzig Mill where years ago was powered by Rocky Creek on its way to the Current River where the wild horses occasionally drink.

In October of 1970, I received a call from Frank Wyle, CEO and founder of Wyle Laboratories in El Segundo, California. One of their subsidiaries, American Tool Company in Cincinnati, Ohio, was importing machine tools from Hindustan Machine Tool (HMT) in India. They needed photographs of their facilities for marketing. Two weeks later, I was on my way to India. In our spare time, Frank and I drove through the countryside; it was like stepping back into time. The photo opportunities were fantastic! At that time, there were only a few cars in the villages, mostly bullock carts and bicycles. Upon my return to Los Angeles, I decided to put together a collection of photographs called "Rural India." My next assignment in India, "India: The Sexy Subcontinent," was for Playboy. The photographs appeared in Oui magazine. Our locations were in the Konarak Area and the Maharajah of Jamnagar's palace. These photos are not in the book. I returned several more times in 1972 and 1973 to the villages to continue my "Rural India" project. When I returned in 1973, I contacted the Government of India Tourist Office and Pan American World Airways to sponsor me in a museum show, "Rural India." I got the sponsorship and was featured in an exhibit in 1974 at The Museum of Science and Industry in Los Angeles. The Government of India Tourist Office sent me to India many times in the '70s, '80s, '90s to photograph tourist locations. I have returned to India in 2009, 2010, 2012, 2018 on my own to continue my "My Impressions of India" project. Check out the locations on page 16 of the book. India and my many experiences there have had a big influence on my life. On my first trip, I was in a boat on the Ganga River at Varanasi. At sunrise, I looked over the edge of the boat and saw my reflection in the water. The person looking back at me was an Indian man. I knew at that time I had a past life in India. The experience gave me the chills. When I was in the villages, I saw the kids at play with each other, and their happy smiles had an effect on me. That led me to ask myself: Are we happier with all our possessions or are they happier without them?
