This exploration of the relationship between gender and ecology brings together around 50 emerging and established artists across the fields of photography and film. Reflecting on a range of themes, from extractive industries to the politics of care, this book looks at environmental and gender justice as indivisible parts of a global struggle. A culturally diverse selection of works by Laura Aguilar, melanie bonajo, Xaviera Simmons, Minerva Cuevas, Barbara Kruger, Nadia Huggins, Ana Mendieta, Sim Chi Yin, Pamela Singh, Francesca Woodman and others are presented alongside works of an activist nature to demonstrate how women are regularly at the forefront of advocating and caring for the planet. Amplifying these visions are illuminating essays by experts in the field, including Professor Kathryn Yusoff, Professor Astrida Neimanis, Professor Catriona Sandilands and Professor Elizabeth DeLoughrey, that consider a diverse range of timely topics such as hydrofeminism, the body as earth, queer ecologies, and environmental racism. Together these texts and important artworks reveal how the oppression of women, feminized bodies and indigenous, Black and trans communities and the degradation of the planet are inextricably linked - and the ways in which understanding our environment can resist and overcome the logic of capitalist economies.

Spanning the career of one of Japan's most revered photographers, this monograph-the only English-language volume of its kind-features exquisitely detailed full-page images that capture the relationship between human-made structures and the natural world. Toshio Shibata's large-format contemporary landscapes are distinguished by their haunting beauty, graceful composition, and meticulous detail. Using long exposures, and eliminating any references to people, horizons, or identifying geographic reference points, Shibata captures structures such as dams, bridges, reservoirs, and roads as they interact with their natural settings-mountainsides, rivers, and forests and fields. The results are highlighted by painterly composition; filled with patterns, lines, and fluid action; and unmistakably Japanese in their aesthetic. Curated and with commentary by Phillip Prodger, one of the most erudite and critical voices in contemporary photography, this book will appeal both to fans of Shibata's work as well as an audience that has yet to discover his remarkable oeuvre.

The Stranger is a photographic series that span over nearly two decades. It began when the photographer Preben Holst decided to approach a stranger in a park and asked if he could do a portrait of him. Fascinated by the strength and immediacy of the resulting images, he continued to make portraits of strangers in cities such as Copenhagen, London and Oslo, where he now lives. The young men captured by Holst¿s analogue camera become testimonies of the subtle and gradual changes that urban masculine identity has undergone since the turn of the millennium. Holst with his sympathetic lens is a master of distilling the essence of his subjects, revealing to us a glimpse of their personalities and inner psychology ¿ complete with the longings and insecurities of youth. Preben Holst (b. 1974 in Kristiansand, Norway) is a photographer and artist based in Oslo. He graduated MFA from the Malmö Art Academy in 2009 and was awarded The Hasselblad Foundation Victor Fellowship in 2008. He has exhibited widely in Scandinavia and took part in the inaugural exhibition of the new National Museum, in Oslo 2022. His first monograph Preben Holst: Things That Never Happened (Teknisk Industri), was published in 2011.

The Gate of Gates is the catalogue of the Red Sea Museum¿s inaugural exhibition. Curated by famous writer Philippe Cardinal, the exhibit showcases a unique collection of photographs by renowned Saudi artist Moath Alofi that revives the soul of this magnificent building, rich in history and memory. Commissioned by Saudi Arabiäs Ministry of Culture to photo[1]graphing Bab Al-Bunt prior to its renovation and repurposing as a museum, Moath Alofi not only captures the rich architectural details of Bab Al-Bunt; he also encapsulates the sense of mystery behind the items he found abandoned in the building, objects of the past that recall another era and stand witness to the vitality of the place for hundreds of years. The sober yet powerful photographs convey a striking impression of serenity and purity; a serenity that probably evokes the quietude of the millions of pilgrims who landed in Jeddah after a long and perilous journey across the Red Sea, awaiting to reach their final destination in the holy city. A purity that reflects the innocence of their souls, the patience and self-sacrifice they have shown to reach the geographical center of their religious faith and surrender their person to God. Alofi¿s still photographs paradoxically vibrate with life ; they communicate the aspirations, memories, dreams, and feelings of pilgrims, merchants, and dwellers who have turned Bab Al-Bunt into the ¿Gate of Gates¿.

Black Masculinities explores the broad spectrum and diversity of Black masculinities through the medium of contemporary photography. Seen through the lenses of 22 Black (or) People of Color (BPoC) from around the world, the stereotypic entanglement of Black identity and masculinity is deconstructed and charged with a new set of values. Embedded in a long history of slavery, racism and oppression, the topos of Black masculinity continues to be subtly represented as aggressive, hypersexual and violent to this day. This richly illustrated book breaks down and visualizes the common mechanisms of representation in visual culture through carefully edited images and a textual contextualization. It acts as an introductory index and platform for BPoC photographers, who have been underrepresented at all levels of art production since the beginnings of photography, and makes their work visible. Richard Kalvar has spent over fifty years observing humans through his camera lens, trying to understand the ambiguous and mysterious relation between outward appearances and inner feelings. Not always successfully. With Selected Writings he shifts his gaze from what people physically reveal to what they write. That should be much clearer, but is it? Kalvar delicately navigates his way though the fog of expression, bumping along the way into joy, anger, confusion, incomprehensibility, and meaning often turned awry. What¿s on offer here is a collection of bizarre and fascinating visual messages, both intentional and unintentional, cast out in the world The result is unexpected, and often very funny.

The America Series is her first monograph and is a collection of photographs, created 2021 ¿ 2022, while traveling from the East Coast to the West and back in an electric vehicle, made into a make shift studio. While charging the electric vehicle, Montmare encountered and photographed people from all walks of life, while discussing topics of the environment, hopes and dreams for the future. Not only is the population continuing to evolve as new immigrants make the US their home, the land is also physically changing, as a result of the climate crisis we are facing. The westward route is one of aspiration and opportunity — a reflection on the topic of immigration and diversity, both from the photographers point of view and her subjects — and includes Native, African American and LGBTQ perspectives and voices. The work touches upon urgent current topics: climate, sustainability, the energy crisis and the electrification agenda.Against a backdrop of a uniform man-made urban landscape, with the repetition of strip malls, fast food chains and billboards urging people to consume more, the work also highlights the economic difference between Americans that have, and Americans that have not, and where sustainability discussions sometimes seem like a luxury.

The first longterm appraisal of the photography of Daniel Schwartz. Daniel Schwartz's photographs explore human activities set against an immense range of political geography and cultural history, touching on such monumental themes as imperial warfare, ancient history, environmental collapse and the vanishing cryosphere. Tracings reveals a body of work that is humanistically motivated and anchored in reality, blurring the divide between photojournalism and art. Positioning Schwartz¿s work to date in the wider history of the medium, Tracings draws together themes tackled in five monographs concerned with cultural history, political geography and the environment published by Thames & Hudson between 1986 and 2017. Essays by Beat Wismer, Giovanna Calvenzi and Carolin Emcke examine the ways Schwartz¿s documentary photography intersects with the arts; look at photographic affinities and methods in Schwartz¿s work, analysing the narrative of his previous books; and study Schwartz¿s depiction of the individual at work, and how photographs of human activities are interwoven with photographs of nature. Tracings is not so much a retrospective as a project tracing and continuing an evolutionary line through all Schwartz¿s projects to date.

Over a period of forty years, Hé lè ne Binet has photographed both contemporary and historical architecture - this is the complete monograph of her work, with two extensive critical essays. Marco Iuliano details Hé lè ne Binet's background, from her childhood in the Italian fishing village of Sperlonga and in Rome, through her early ' discovery' of architectural photographer Lucien Hervé, to other significant influences, like the Architectural Association in London where she met Zaha Hadid. The essay highlights in detail Binet's approach to photography, her process and archive. Martino Stierli sets Binet's work within the conceptual framework of architectural photography, discussing whether an architectural photograph is an inventory of a building or space, a translation into a two-dimensional image or, rather, an image in its own right; an artifact that loosely relates to the original object or phenomenon. The two essays are followed by a catalogue of Binet's work, which is framed within a series of her recurring themes emerged through dialogues between the authors and the photographer.

"He doesn't bother me," Picasso commented of the photographerEdward Quinn, after the latter had first photographedhim at work in the ceramics studio in the early1950s. This was undoubtedly one of the reasons why Quinnwas allowed to accompany the artist with his Leica for over20 years from 1951 onwards during his time on the Côted'Azur: in the studio, in private with his family, with artistfriends, at the bullfight, out and about, with lovers or simplyat the hairdresser's. The Quinn Archive holds a largestock of photographs of great intimacy, showing Picassoin everyday life and documenting his idiosyncratic character, his humor, and his enthusiasm in an amiable andlight-hearted way.Edward Quinn did not use a tripod with his camera, nor didhe illuminate the room artificially; his main concern wasto capture genuine pictures. As a viewer, you find yourselfon eye level with the protagonists. Almost like in the streetphotography we know today, there is a captivating senseof the casual moment. This book is a magical selection ofphotographs from Picasso's everyday life and shows thefamous artist in many unexpected situations. From 1949, EDWARD QUINN (1920, Dublin-1997, Altendorf/Switzerland) lived and worked on the Côte d'Azur as a press photographer for international magazines such as Life and Paris Match. During his 20-year friendship with Picasso, he took more than 12,000 photographs of the artist. From the 1960s onwards, Quinn concentrated his work entirely on the art scene, portraying the likes of Max Ernst, Alexander Calder, Francis Bacon, Salvador Dalí, Graham Sutherland, David Hockney and Georg Baselitz.

Louise Amelie's documentary photo series is an artistic exploration of the global phenomenon of migration and its many facets, which are often ignored in European migration politics. Migration has always been an integral part of human experience and will continue to be. Yet in public discourse it is presented as an aberration, while the existence of nation-state borders is hardly ever questioned. On the globe, Kyrgyzstan nestles inconspicuously next to Kazakhstan and China, but on the ground the vastness and heights of the mountains seem endless. In contrast to the natural beauty, prefabricated housing estates spring up in the capital, Bishkek. Here lives a young population that, despite all the adversities of post-Soviet reality, faces the world with great confidence. In a collection of portraying texts and photographs that foreground the individual stories, the book is an expression of solidarity and empathy, and shows that migration can mean both an opportunity as well as the painful loss of a beloved Missing Member. The artistic focus of director and photographer LOUISE AMELIE (*1991, Berlin) is on documentary and street photography. Her series, shot in the USA between 2016 and 2020, have been exhibited internationally and have been awarded the German Photo Book Prize and the Belfast Photo Festival. Since 2021, she has been exploring the theme of post-Soviet identity and migration in Central Asia, spending two and a half months in Kyrgyzstan for this project.

A vivid showcase of work by more than thirty of the world's leading contemporary female documentary photographers. The photographic industry - its exhibitions, galleries, publications and auctions - employs thousands of women, but champions mostly men. To begin to redress the balance, here is a timely presentation of the work of over 30 female photographers working today. This book is predominantly a celebration of some of the most inquisitive, intelligent and daring photography being created now. The stories the photographers tell are the most pressing social, political and personal issues seen through the female lens. Firecracker, established in 2011 by Fiona Rogers, is a platform dedicated to supporting female photographers worldwide by showcasing their work. Building upon Firecracker's foundations, this book brings together photography that encompasses an eclectic variety of styles, techniques and locations, from Alma Haser's futuristic series of portraits that use origami to create 3D sculptures within the frame, to Laura El-Tantawy's filmic and intensely personal series on political protest in Cairo. There is a recurring theme throughout the book that serves to unite these extraordinary women and their work: the exploration of marginalized individuals and under-discussed subjects, seen by fresh eyes. Fiona Rogers and Max Houghton offer insightful and expert authorship and curation. In their respective, well-established roles in the industry they understand, influence and advocate for contemporary documentary photography today.
