Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966), one of the most significant figures in 20th-century art, was throughout his life closely attached to his family, and in particular to his parents Giovanni and Annetta Giacometti, in their native Swiss village of Stampa. At least once a week he wrote to the parents to keep them up-to-date on everything important to him, maintaining this routine even when a telephone was installed at their house in the remote Val Bregaglia. Their entire correspondence comprises more than 1,000 letters. For the first time ever, excerpts from this body of documents are now published in this volume. They reveal fascinating insights into this close family relationship and the manifold exchanges about core issues of Alberto's life and work as an artist. The letters tell of his artistic education in Switzerland and the early years in Paris-his studies at the art academy and encounters with the avant-garde, his joining with and later turning away from the Surrealist movement-as well as of his search for a new figuration between 1935 and 1946. Thus, the book provides entirely new knowledge about the evolution and circumstances of one of Modernity's greatest artists.

Upon his arrival in New York in the 1960s, Istanbul-born artist Burhan Dogançay (1929-2013) became deeply fascinated by the visual aesthetics of urban walls and murals. His interest focused on exploring public space and its significance as a forum for the debate of social and political as well as artistic norms. He continuously sketched and photographed walls and doorways, transferring many of the captured motifs into paintings. Over more than four decades, Dogançay compiled a vast body of photographic testimonials of urban life and discourse which he titled Walls of the World: a unique archive comprising some 30,000 images from 114 countries. This bilingual French-German book features a selection of Dogançay's paintings and photographs from various series within the entire Walls of the World collection. The pictures-like the walls themselves-are the result of superimposed layers and techniques. Through this use of different painting and collage techniques, they reflect the temporal dimension of these surfaces with the scribbles, posters, scraps, and graffiti accumulated on them. The essays that supplement the images investigate Dogançay's ongoing engagement with the urban wall as a projection surface as well as his method of combining photography and sketching as the basis for his remarkable graphic and painted art.

In this book Phiri's text and Rubsamen's paintings explore the visual and biological affects of 'Light Trespass'. Looking at the Earth from low orbit, they ask, what is visible from space? The answer seems to be consumer fantasy and private property. At night, the lights visible from space are from advertising, nearly half a million electrified billboards in the US alone, and the search lights and flood lights illuminating and protecting warehouses, factories, and chain store parking lots from theft and vandalism. Lights that articulate escapism and consumption and lights that articulate the boundaries of ownership and exclusion. What is evident to any thinking creature watching the earth at night from space is that light distinguishes rich from poor, have from have-not, secure from insecure and reality from make-belief. Hard bound with over 40 color photos this book investigates the new struggle, aesthetic, psychological and economic, between the 'Nocturnal' and 'Diurnal'.

This thesis studies the urban history of Mumbai from the perspective of popular Hindi films. The change of the name from Bombay to Mumbai in 1995 is symbolic of the transition of the colonial city from a centre of industrial capitalism to a neoliberal city, characterised by finance capital. It also signals the massive changes in the social and the political spheres of the city. Thomas Blom Hansen's Violence in Urban India starts its narrative of the city with a conversation that the author had on a suburban train, few weeks before the official rechristening. He asked an elderly gentleman about his reaction to the proposed change of the city's name from Bombay to Mumbai. While poring over an article in the English daily, Times of India, regarding the change of name of the city, the gentleman promptly answered: "its proper name is Bombay."

The tributes paid by former players and colleagues are fulsome and fabulously flattering. Michael's father owned a photographic shop in Beckenham, Kent so the groundings were there. This led to him becoming serious about photography, though he began his working life as a graphic artist. Arthur, Michael's father, was mad about tennis and combined his passions by photographing Wimbledon, commencing straight after the war. From 1970 Cole covered Wimbledon and the other major tournaments, such as the US Open in New York, the French Open in Paris and the Stella Artois at Queen's. He travelled to Monaco, Portugal, Florida and Moscow to shoot the tennis stars in action, and often not in action. His speciality was the outré, the humorous and off-the-wall. Tennis Week stated, 'While everyone else is focused on forehands and backhands, Cole will notice the caterpillar climbing up the net post, the humorous moment as a ball kid tries to catch a moth. The combination of creativity and quirkiness, ' takes Michael's photography to another level. One event was a particular favourite for him. He states 'The French Open lends itself so much to ambience pictures. The people there are so well dressed, there's women, hats and children... In fact, I had more non-tennis pictures in my files from the French Open than any other.' In this book is a distillation of Michael Cole's brilliant tennis photography. For him the biggest challenge in creating this wonderful visual celebration of lawn tennis was deciding what to exclude. He has a passion and emotional attachment to every single one of his stunning photographs. One can see why.

In a city full of recently embalmed architecture, few buildings look as un-dead as the corner shopping Plaza. Take the one at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and North Fuller Avenue in Hollywood, California. A squat rectangle of stucco and drywall, it offers everything we've come to expect in a corner 'convenience center': a pizza parlor, a doughnut shop, a cell phone store, a massage parlor, an immigration lawyer a check-cashing service and a coin Laundromat. There's the requisite oil-stained parking lot, the brick enclosed dumpster, some spindly palms and an imposing street sign with every business name in a different font, color and size. The corner Plaza has standard principles: L-shaped and usually situated at a busy intersection, driveway access from two streets, free parking but never enough, a variety of goods and services in separate concessions, but all in a single place. The anchor tenant now most commonly a Cannabis Dispensary. In this collection of 46 photographs, all shot in Hollywood in April of 2022, Glen Rubsamen documents his awe and appreciation for the "corner Plaza convenience center".

The photobook "No Fat Poetry" is a democratic marriage of image and text, without any subordination or superordination of either. Nowadays, new media communicates a hitherto unimagined quantity of images. This means that, today, images are far more dependent on their context, and it is within these contexts that they generate an importance that may change, depending on where the image appears or who or what the image is juxtaposed with-in this case, text and typography. The origins of the texts are democratic too, and almost all of them are recycled (samplings). They are quotes by artists and photographers; they come from the street or from photo - graphic theory or aesthetics. Ultimately, the involvement of the photographers is also democratic, including newcomers and established photographers alike (e.g., Thomas Demand, Alex Prager, Jörg Sasse, Alec Soth, Josef Sudek, Jürgen Teller, Jeff Wall).
