Cabaret has historically existed on the fringes, populated by those who find themselves, voluntarily or involuntarily, falling outside of conventional society. It pushes the boundaries of gender, politics, identity, power, and social norms. It's live and unpredictable, bringing together a variety of performances to create a unique, and often never-repeated, entertainment experience. A cabaret show consists of a selection of short performances in a variety of styles and genres, including drag, burlesque, boylesque, circus and sideshow. Shows happen anywhere and everywhere - bar, club, theatre, library, carpark; cabaret's adaptability and ephemeral nature are what set it apart from the formality and precision of traditional theater.Life as a Cabaret celebrates the vibrancy and diversity of the underground cabaret scene, uplifting and representing those who are typically overlooked. With a focus on Drag Kings, Queens and In-Betweens, Burlesque, Boylesque and Queerlesque, this book showcases this incredibly dynamic and fascinating world for what it really is - glamorous, polished and professional at times, but also intoxicatingly punk, inescapably queer and gloriously messy. It's a space for experimentation, for pushing and challenging boundaries, for seeking a voice and a platform that's unavailable in mainstream society, creating a different kind of society, even if it's just for one night. Life as a Cabaret is not only a cross-section of the drag world, but also a love letter to it. The photographs showcase each performer's individuality as works of art in and of themselves, immortalizing the beauty and power of these individuals who are determined to stand out from the crowd, embracing the hustle, oddness, contradictions, differences, and most of all, the unstoppable creativity.

During the Second World War, Hungary deployed several tank units to support the Axis war effort. The Hungarian army mainly used two types of tanks during the conflict: the Toldi and the Turán in different variants. The Toldi was a Hungarian light tank developed in the 1930s. It was an agile tank suitable for reconnaissance and troop support tasks. The Turán was the first mass-produced Hungarian tank. It was based on the chassis of the Czechoslovak LT vz. 38. However, the light armour made these tanks vulnerable to enemy hits. They were mainly used on the Eastern Front against the Soviet Union.

Selten haben wir ein Buch annonciert, das bedingt durch Presseberichte und Ausstellungen soviel Aufmerksamkeit, Anfragen und Vorbestellungen erzeugt hat, bevor es überhaupt erscheint!_________________Over four years and seasons, Loredana Nemes has photographed the beech trees that are characteristic of the landscape above the chalk cliffs of the island of Rügen, made famous in art and history. What began as a relaxing walk has turned into an impressive, long-term photographic observation of this "forest seascape."The pictures she has produced are of an ancient, archaic landscape that has survived for many generations and will continue to survive over many more in the future. They capture the quiet, the beauty, the robustness, and the fragility of the beeches set against the backdrop of the smooth, timeless horizon above the sea; and the magic of fog, light, clouds, snow, and the seasons of the year. At the same time, however, they also convey a sense of both ephemerality and hazard, because the forests are at the mercy of climate change.Perhaps the beeches at the Königsstuhl remind Loredana Nemes of the forests in Romania's Carpathian mountains, where she hiked as a child with her father, and this explains the profound emotion expressed in her photographs? At any rate, the beeches on Rügen are linked to the beeches in the Carpathians, for they are all part of a UNESCO natural world heritage site, the "ancient and primeval beech forests in the Carpathians and other European regions." Rarely have we announced a book that has generated so much attention in the press and in exhibitions, as well as so many inquiries and pre-orders before it has even been released!

The Fairies of Foggy Island is a collection of photographs, sketches and stories surrounding the research of Professor Eleanor Russ and Dr. Simon Burridge, as they attempt to find the origins of fairy folklore. Their journey takes them to Foggy Island, a land shrouded in both mist and secrecy. Gaining a grant to study the Island's link to fairy folklore, the two researchers spend a year exploring the uncharted terrain, searching for forgotten relics to illuminate the origins of fairy belief. What they discover is much more magical. Fairies exist on Foggy Island.

Edizione Volume Italiano-Inglese

The book celebrating 100 years since the founding of the historic Italian multinational company. In the early 1920s, Oronzio De Nora was a young electrochemistry researcher at Politecnico di Milano. Experimenting with a new electrolytic cell, he cut his finger; he dipped the wound into the plant¿s oxygenated and electrified solution and invented Amuchina, a chlorine disinfectant. A touch of luck, a touch of genius. Over the course of the 20th century, the De Nora company became a world leader in the production of chlorine and soda; it developed hundreds of patents and established itself as one of the key drivers for industrial development. After a century of history and three De Nora generations, the company is now a multinational group, listed on the Stock Exchange, looking towards the sustainable future of the planet, energy conversion, and decarbonization. There is always an electrolytic cell behind the most advanced forms of green hydrogen production and water purification treatments. De Nora. Stories from a century of life recounts this exciting race towards the future. Luca Masia has written it in the form of short stories, in a narrative style that captivates the reader¿s attention from the very first pages. With an artist¿s gaze, Luca Campigotto ¿ one of the most widely appreciated Italian photographers on the international scene ¿ has documented the complex reality of De Nora: research laboratories, large-scale production, and specialized technicians. Its words and images illustrate a journey of scientific discoveries and technological innovations undertaken with ingenuity and dedication, while always putting people at the heart of the enterprise.

Francesca Woodman and Julia Margaret Cameron: Portraits to Dream In draws parallels between two of the most significant practitioners in the history of photography, presenting fresh research, rare vintage prints, and previously unseen archival works. 'I feel that photographs can either document and record reality or they can offer images as an alternative to everyday life: places for the viewer to dream in.' ? Francesca Woodman, 1980 Living and working over a century apart, Julia Margaret Cameron (1815?1879) and Francesca Woodman (1958?1981) experienced very different ways of making and understanding photographs. Francesca Woodman and Julia Margaret Cameron: Portraits to Dream In accompanies the exhibition of the same name opening at the National Portrait Gallery, London, in March 2024. Spanning the careers of both artists, the beautifully illustrated catalogue includes their best-known photographs as well as less familiar images. The exhibition works are arranged into eight thematic sections with feature essays, offering an accessible, engaging opportunity to consider both artists in a new light. This publication presents the artists? exploration of portraiture as a ?dream space?. It makes new connections between their work, which pushed the boundaries of the photographic medium and experimented with ideas of beauty, symbolism, transformation and storytelling to produce some of art history?s most compelling and admired photographs. The most comprehensive photographic document of the London council estate, with fascinating images from every London borough and the City, featuring some 300 estates built between 1947 and 1981. As the most comprehensive photographic document of the London council estate, this book provides an insight, featuring some 300 estates from every borough and the City. London Estates features the first post-war housing in Paddington, Islington and Romford; the Modernist schemes in Finsbury, Bethnal Green, Poplar, Wandsworth, Camberwell and the Cities of London and Westminster; the acclaimed 1960s estates of Camden and Lambeth; and the lesser-known 1970s estates of Kingston, Haringey, Havering, Hillingdon and Tower Hamlets. There are designs from a broad range of architects including Denys Lasdun (Keeling House, Trevelyan House); Chamberlin, Powell & Bon (Golden Lane Estate), Erno Goldfinger (Balfron Tower, Trellick Tower); Basil Spence (Stock Orchard Estate, Tustin Estate), and Kate Macintosh (Dawson¿s Heights). A huge range of architectural styles are represented ¿ from prefabricated and `self-built¿ schemes, to Modernist and brutalist designs, including over 30 protected historic buildings. This book celebrates London council estates in all their diversity, championing the neglected alongside the distinguished, honouring their immeasurable contribution to the social and architectural fabric of the capital.

For more than two hundred years, women have served in the American Armed Forces in various capacities, aiding their country when they could not enlist themselves. In 1948, President Harry S. Truman signed the Women's Armed Services Integration Act into law, officially allowing women to serve as full, permanent members of all branches of the military, though they could not yet serve in direct combat. Just a decade ago, in 2013, the ban on women in combat was lifted, allowing them to serve in direct combat roles. This book is an absorbing account of the contributions and experiences of a dozen women serving in the military in recent decades. Photojournalist Steven Clevenger met the women on his various assignments covering wars overseas and at their home bases in the United States, as well as through the Warrior Games and other programs for veterans. Pairing powerful photographs with interviews, Clevenger intimately captures each soldier's strength, vulnerability, and resilience, creating a poignant and heartfelt body of work that is sure to inspire anyone.

Enigmatic rock art featuring a myriad of symbols and designs can be found throughout remote and arid landscapes of the Greater Southwest, from the Four Corners region of the American West to the Baja California peninsula in Mexico. This vast gallery of ancient art offers intriguing questions. Who created these images on stone and what were their motivations? What do they mean? Are they to be taken literally or might they stand for something else? In this book, William Frej's powerful black and white photographs of rock art in the American Southwest and Baja California provide the opportunity to explore this diverse and mysterious imagery--and to ponder these questions. By framing these images on stone by the expansive landscapes in which they are found, his photographs emphasize the importance of their settings. The accompanying photo captions by noted rock art scholar Polly Schaafsma present clues to the symbolic content of these stone murals. Her essay, "Blurred Boundaries," addresses the ambiguities latent in their complex meanings. To illustrate, Schaafsma addresses several elements of the visual vocabulary of rock art in the region-the spiral, stepped clouds, depictions of the human form, animals, and shields. Schaafsma notes that rock art can be viewed from many perspectives and she suggests that we move beyond Western philosophy to consider an animistic universe in which all things are sacred. In the foreword Frank Graziano also emphasizes how our own beliefs and perceptions influence the way we experience rock art. Rock art is more than a static reminder of the faraway past. The images continue to impact us even today, no matter what our perspective.

The perfect primer on American photographer, photojournalist and filmmaker Ruth Orkin. Ruth Orkin (1921¿85) always dreamed of becoming a filmmaker, and although that ambition was thwarted until later in her career, she quickly found other ways of engaging with the world of images. She was given her first camera at the age of ten and by the age of seventeen, she was cycling across America from Los Angeles to New York, documenting her trip in albums of annotated photographs. In the early 1940s she settled in New York, joining the Photo League and making her name with photo stories for major magazines such as Life, Look and This Week. In images that range from celebrity portraits to bird¿s-eye views from her apartment window, from children at play to the experiences of a lone American tourist in Italy, Orkin¿s photography always retains a cinematic sense of the passage of time and allows the humanity and charisma of her subjects to shine through.
