A traveler's quest for Michelangelo's most troubled work of art--the notorious Tomb of Pope Julius II. "A delightful combination of art history and light drama." -- Kirkus Reviews His artistic ambitions crumbling as fast as his marriage, Sam careens through Europe seeking inspiration in the great Michelangelo who, for all his success, struggled to complete what was to be his magnum opus. Sam teams up with an intriguing Italian woman who opens his eyes to the deeper meaning of the Tomb: how Michelangelo's grand ambitions got continually derailed. The result? A profound "midlife crisis." Incredibly, Michelangelo at Midlife is the only non-academic book about the Tomb. Sam travels from Florence, where Michelangelo began the project, to the quarries of Carrara where he dreamed up a colossal 50-foot pyramid studded with David-sized statues. From Paris to Venice, the Sistine to Amsterdam, Sam chases the tangled 40-year tale of the Tomb. The story takes on added life with 180 COLOR illustrations, including graphics of the Tomb's evolution. The author, Gene Openshaw, has also written numerous best-selling books and PBS TV shows with travel guru Rick Steves. Michelangelo at Midlife culminates in Rome, where the parallel stories converge. Can Michelangelo--and Sam--navigate the choppy waters of middle age and realize their youthful dreams? "This is an entertaining treat, especially for art lovers and wanderlust-afflicted travelers looking for a breezy read." -- Kirkus Reviews

"There are times in life when we are brought to placesat just the right time to hear just what we need to hear."These words from the woods are the inspiration within Reflections, a Symphony in Silence composed during a 72 hour retreat. Written in four movements ~ Arrive, Aware, Serene, Renew ~ Reflections invites you to experience a retreat of your own as you journey through this collection of poetry and pictures. A bit from within:~~ "Here, where sounds of silenceserenade my soul, my pulse slows.Breath slides deeper, nudges my heart awake. In a world where more is better and less is less,Here, there's none of thatand all of this. Here, land becomes sanctuaryfor souls longing to rememberthe why of it all in a world of just too much"Earth stirs the author's curiosity as she listens to what she hears and narrates what she sees. When asked why, she responds, "I am not Mother Earth, but I can mother this earth through words and invitation to show her I care. When I return to the land, I feel most at home within me. Our world is noisy. I wrote this for you as a way to remember what is often drowned by sound, but is always just a pause and breath away."

This book offers an in-depth technical presentation of photography and details about the inner workings of the digital camera, while keeping the artistic principles in mind. Departing from the current stream, the book treats photography as a highly scientific and technical subject, and serves as a reference to those who seek for an understanding of the technical aspects relating to the photographic camera, the beating heart of photography. It offers insight on why the photographs are created the way they are, highlighting also the limitations. As the author of this book is an image technology scientist and a photography enthusiast who has been teaching photography for a long time, this treatise reflects his own constant search and study for an in-depth understanding.

Charow spent the past two years creating his first photography book about artists living under the protection of The Loft Law. The law, enacted in 1982, granted protection and rent control to thousands of artists who were living illegally in commercial and manufacturing zoned lofts in neighborhoods like Soho, Tribeca, and the Bowery after the manufacturing industry left New York. Two years ago he found a map of the remaining protected buildings, rang hundreds of doorbells, and photographed and interviewed over 50 artists who are still living in these incredible lofts to this day. As New York faces an unprecedented amount of empty commercial space, this is perfect timing for this incredible untold story.

The debut monograph of Sebastian Sabal-Bruce showcases a mesmerizing collection of portraits and landscapes, elegantly woven together in a cinematic and poetic sequence. Primarily featuring the diverse places and faces Sabal-Bruce has encountered throughout his career, this work blurs the lines between fiction and documentary. It subtly weaves a narrative centered on a female protagonist emerging from the confining urban landscapes of cities like Tokyo and Manhattan. As she traverses these spaces, a poignant dance ensues between the masks we wear and our authentic selves, juxtaposing alienating city streets with raw moonlit portraits. The narrative's abstract and subtle essence encourages viewers to immerse themselves and derive personal interpretations.

Forty large-format black-and-white portraits of women tell, with a single protagonist, the kaleidoscopic female universe and its infinite facets Through Her Eyes is a journey through female eternity. The artist¿s attentive gaze spans centuries and traditions to offer us a multifaceted representation of women, relating constantly to their roles in society and their inner world. The muse and sole protagonist of this artistic research is the ethereal Ludmilla Voronkina Bozzetti. The artistic project Through Her Eyes ¿ Timeless Strength took shape in 2021, when Vadukul met Ludmilla during a shoot for Roberto Cavalli¿s Zero Collection and he was dazzled. Ludmilla, the subject of this fascinating narrative, is much more than a model. Her magnetic presence and strength make her the soul of this exhibition, perfectly complementing the extraordinary art of Max Vadukul. Taken at the timeless Villa Gattoni in Meleti, Lombardy, the photographs immortalise Ludmilläs evolution in an entrancing journey that forms the heart of Vadukul¿s narrative. In the photographer¿s eyes, Ludmilla is a multifaceted woman: daughter, wife, mother, seductress, worker. She is both absorbed and detached, sad and thoughtful, but also strong, self-assured and triumphant. Vadukul shows us that a woman is an endless kaleidoscope of different perspectives and worlds, an infinite feminine world that cannot be immortalised in a single shot. Every image awakens in the audience an awareness of the impossibility of labelling her: she is simultaneously everything, she holds life in her womb and the future in her hands. Max Vadukul¿s art becomes a tribute to the history of women, to their journey through the centuries. Ludmilläs feminine energy and strength, which span history and are manifested in the artist¿s photographs, evoke in the heart of the onlooker the eternal respect owed to women.

Photographer Scott Mead showcases the poignant black-and-white photographs from his archive for the first time, documenting his early adulthood in New England, USA, from 1971 to 1976 and exploring discovery, ritual, rural beauty and urban metropolis. Photographer Scott Mead, born in 1954 in Washington, D.C., revisits his formative years spent documenting New England, USA, in Rites of Passage for the first time. Shot over a five-year period between 1971 and 1976, we follow Mead through early adulthood and explore scenes of discovery, ritual, rural beauty and urban metropolis. At a junction between an American road trip and a personal visual diary, Mead¿s images depict a world as it was then, shaped by political upheaval, profound civil changes and the Cold War. The tensions embedded in these photographs resonate now amid a fraught social landscape and increasing polarisation. Recent global events gave Mead the opportunity for intense self-reflection as he delved into his photographic archive. The clothbound hardback book features 100 large-format prints of Mead¿s poignant photographs to be considered in a new context. The 35mm black and white images portray life in a time of transition as the viewer¿s eyes are drawn into the atmospheric imagery, compositions and textures captured within them. Rites of Passage shows Mead with a camera always at hand and presents his delicate, often amusing and sometimes uneasy portraits alongside cityscapes, landscapes and snapshots of the lives of friends and strangers. All of the artist¿s proceeds from Rites of Passage benefit Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London.

An exceptional immersive journey across time and space to unravel the soul of an iconic traditional and artistic village in the heart of Arabia Genius of the Place: Al Muftaha book series is an invitation to embark on an exceptional immersive journey across time and space to unravel the soul of a historical and cultural village in the heart of Arabia. Located in Abha region, in the southern part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Al Muftaha was once an area vibrant with life, creativity, and artistic ingenuity: positioned amid an exceptional landscape surrounded by green hills and purple-colored jacaranda trees, this traditional village with its distinctive architectural style of mud-composed, white and turquoise-painted small houses, was in the 1980s a hub for artists and creatives. As part of its efforts to establish cultural assets that promote culture as a way of life, the Ministry of Culture of Saudi Arabia has worked on the restoration and renovation of Al Muftaha and commissioned four artist photographers and four writers from Saudi Arabia, the Arab region, and Europe to capture the soul and memory of Al Muftaha. The result is an astonishing collection of rare images accompanied by a compelling narrative, that take the reader on a visual voyage uncovering the ¿genius of the place¿ called Al Muftaha. This artistic book series not only exhibits the architectural beauty of Al Muftaha, but also magically reveals the sense of the place by combining poignant images with a compelling narrative. Photographs of empty alleys, abandoned studios, and the famous Talal Al Maddah Theater ¿ once the landmark of Al Muftaha ¿ all capture the ¿sense of the place¿ and reminisce the lively spirit of this village now turned still.

SINK / RISE is the third chapter of The Day May Break, NickBrandt's ongoing global series portraying people and animalsthat have been impacted by environmental degradationand destruction. This third chapter focuses onSouth Pacific Islanders impacted by climate change andserves as a stark reminder of the looming reality manyisland nations face. The local people in these photos, photographedunderwater in the ocean off the coast of theFijian islands, symbolize the many people who stand tolose their homes, land and livelihoods in the coming decadesas the water rises. The images-all shot in-camera underwater-are hauntinglybeautiful. But beyond the immediate visual impact,Brandt's work delves deeper, asking: how did we get here? What does the future hold for these communities? Andhow can we mitigate, if not reverse, the damage? Brandt'semphatic portraits bridge the often abstract concept of climatechange and are a reminder that behind every statisticabout rising sea levels, there's a tangible human story.NICK BRANDT (*1964, London) studied painting and film at St.Martin's School of Art, London.
