    - Architecture and World Views in Eighteenth-Century Denmark
av Thomas Lyngby, Else Marie Bukdahl, Peter Thule Kristensen, m.fl.
    795,-

Lauritz de Thurah (1706–1759) was one of Denmark’s most significant architects of the Baroque period. He created several important buildings, including the Hermitage Hunting Lodge, the Royal Palace in Roskilde, Gammel Holtegaard and the famous spire of the Church of Our Saviour in Copenhagen, and masterminded conversions and extensions of properties such as Ledreborg, Frederiksborg Castle, Børglum Kloster and the now demolished summer residence Hirschholm Palace – widely known as the Versailles of the North. The mainstay of this monograph is architect dr.phil. Peter Thule Kristensen’s presentation of Thurah’s rich and complex architecture. The other chapters, written by experts Else Marie Bukdahl, Martin Søberg, Thomas Lyngby, Natalie Patricia Körner, Sanne Maekelberg and Nina Ventzel Riis, describe Thurah’s roles as a leading architectural historian, topographer, grand tour traveller, civil servant, military man and trailblazer within the new social structure in Denmark under absolute rule. The book also sheds light on the Baroque period in a broader sense, delving into the era’s court culture, garden design and church architecture. Finally, the afterlife of Thurah’s works is addressed: how do his buildings function in our present day, having been adapted to the needs and users of a new era?

The name Montessori is widely and inextricably associated with an entirely child-centered and careful pedagogy and education of children. Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was an Italian physician, reform educator, and philosopher whose ideas and work have remained influential throughout the world ever since the 1910s. Her educational concept covers the entirety of development from infancy to young adulthood. It is based on the image of the child as a "builder of his or her self" and therefore uses for the first time the form of open teaching and free work in a prepared learning environment. Montessori schools became trendsetting educational institutions early on, and their concept is strongly reflected in their architecture and equipment. Montessori Architecture is the first book that comprehensively addresses architectural design, construction, and the use of materials in and the furnishing of educational spaces according to Montessori's ideas. The book's first part explores spatial and design principles that make up good kindergarten and school buildings. In the second part, nine case studies are featured in detail through photographs, plans, and concise texts. These examples are located in Europe (the Netherlands, Belgium, Great Britain) as well as in tropical countries (Burkina Faso, Tanzania, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka). Thus, this highly illustrative volume offers practical advice and a wealth of information that is of utmost importance for the design of school buildings in general.

What is required to renew and articulate public spaces? The need for, and demands of, public spaces are highly specific to the local spatial and social conditions under which people live. Action at neighborhood level is crucial, and must involve interacting and co-creating with residents to discover their needs. At the start of the pandemic, superwien was commissioned to develop innovative designs for urban public spaces in three different cities: Dhaka (Bangladesh), Maputo (Mozambique), and Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic). The main objective of this applied research was to strengthen the capacity of local governments to undertake participatory urban design processes. This book calls upon architects and urbanists to develop place-based solutions in challenging circumstances.

"Recalling a charcoal she made in 1916, Georgia O'Keeffe later wrote, 'I have made this drawing several times--never remembering that I had made it before--and not knowing where the idea came from.' These drawings, and the majority of O'Keeffe's works in charcoal, watercolor, pastel and graphite, belong to series in which she develops and transforms motifs that lie between observation and abstraction. In the formative years of 1915 to 1918, she made as many works on paper as she would in the next 40 years, producing sequences in watercolor of abstract lines, organic landscapes and nudes, along with charcoal drawings she would group according to the designation 'specials.' While her practice turned increasingly toward canvas in subsequent decades, important series on paper reappeared--including charcoal flowers of the 1930s, portraits of the 1940s, and aerial views of the 1950s"--Harvard Bookstore website (viewed on April 12, 2023)
