Cleo was bought from a registered breeder, who was at the time my husband's work mate and who brought some adorable Siamese kittens to the television station. He couldn't resist them and soon after brought home one little screamy bundle. The kitten was with us through ups and downs moving from a rented flat to our own unit and then to our newly built home and garden, where she lived for most of her life. It was incredible how quickly she would adapt to a new place yet those were the matters that worried us most. Cleo's arrival changed our life. In a way she taught us, in her dignified way, to be more attentive to her needs while at the same time she was a willing learner to our commands. We became less selfish and more caring. It was clear to us we had a great responsibility looking after this tiny, helpless living being, who was depending on us to live, to survive. To be able to do that, the most important thing is LOVE for animals. People are not bad people because they cannot or want not to have pets. Therefore, it is not a good idea to give a little kitten as a gift to anyone. An individual has to make his/her own decision weather or not he/she would have sufficient love, time and money to care for a pet.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Calling all animal lovers! A heartwarming memoir about one woman's career as a vet and the unique role pets play in our lives • “Filled with compassion and wisdom, Karen Fine is a healer whose own wounds have deepened her gifts for bringing animals and their people comfort and peace.” —Sy Montgomery, bestselling author of The Soul of an Octopus A tribute to our furry, feathery, scaley, and wet family members, All Creatures Great and Small meets Being Mortal in this compelling memoir of one woman's dream to become a veterinarian.Karen Fine always knew that she wanted to be a vet and wasn't going to let anything stop her: not her allergy to cats, and not the fact that in the '80s veterinary medicine was still a mostly male profession. Inspired by her grandfather, a compassionate doctor who paid house calls to all his (human) patients, Dr. Fine persevered, and brought her Oupa's principles into her own practice, which emphasizes the need to understand her patients’ stories to provide the best possible care. And in The Other Family Doctor, Dr. Fine shares all these touching, joyful, heartbreaking, and life-affirming tales that make up her career as a vet. There's:• The feral cat who becomes a creature out of a fable when he puts his trust in a young vet to heal his injured paw• The pot-bellied pig who grows too big to fit in the car but remains a cherished part of her family • The surprising colony of perfectly behaved ferrets• The beloved aging pet who gives her people the gift of accompanying them on one final family vacation• The dog who saves his owner's life in a most unexpected way Woven into Dr. Fine's story are, of course, also the stories of her own pets: the birds, cats, and dogs who have taught her the most valuable lessons—how caring for the animals in our lives can teach us to better care for ourselves, especially when life seems precarious.

A richly illustrated guide to the marvelously diverse plankton of the world and their fundamental role in planetary food webs Plankton are the unsung heroes of planet Earth. Passive drifters through the world's seas, oceans, and freshwater environments, most are invisible or very small, but some are longer than a whale. They are the global ocean's foundation food, supporting almost all oceanic life, and they are also vitally important for land-based plants, animals, and other organisms. Plankton provides an incomparable look at these remarkable creatures, opening a window on the elegance and grace of microscopic marine life. This engaging book reveals the amazing diversity of plankton, how they belong to a wide range of living groups--from microbes to plants to animals--and how their ecology, lifestyles, and adaptations have evolved to suit an enormous range of conditions. It looks at plankton life cycles, the different ways plankton feed and grow, and the vast range of strategies they use for reproduction. It tracks where, how, and why plankton drift through the water; shares perspectives on migrations and population explosions or "blooms" and why they happen; and discusses the life-sustaining role of plankton in numerous intertwined food webs throughout the world. Beautifully illustrated, Plankton sheds critical light on how global warming, pollution, diminishing resources, and overexploitation will adversely impact planktonic life, and how these effects will reverberate to every corner of our planet.
