Robert Service's The Penguin History of Modern Russia: From Tsarism to the Twenty-first Century provides a superb panorama of Russia in the modern age. Russia's recent past has encompassed revolution, civil war, mass terror and two world wars, and the country is still undergoing huge change. In his acclaimed history, now revised and updated with a new introduction and final chapter, Robert Service explores the complex, changing interaction between rulers and ruled from Tsar Nicholas II, through the Russian Revolutions of 1905 and 1917; from Lenin and Stalin through to Gorbachev, Yeltsin, Putin and beyond. This new edition also discusses Russia's unresolved economic and social difficulties and its determination to regain its leading role on the world stage and explains how, despite the recent years of de-communization, the seven decades of communist rule which penetrated every aspect of life still continue to influence Russia today. 'Always well-informed and balanced in his judgements, clear and concise in his analysis ... Service is extremely good on Soviet politics' Orlando Figes, Sunday Telegraph 'A fine book ... it is a dizzying tale and Service tells it well; he has none of the ideological baggage that has so often bedevilled Western histories of Russia' Brian Moynahan, Sunday Times Robert Service is a Fellow of the British Academy and of St Antony's College, Oxford. He has written several books, including the highly acclaimed Lenin: A Biography, Russia: Experiment with a People, Stalin: A Biography and Comrades: A History of World Communism, as well as many other books on Russia's past and present. His most recent book, Trotsky, has been shortlisted for the Duff Cooper Prize.

This historical and comparative ethnography of the Oromo of the Horn of Africa is based on the teachings of the custodians of the sacred knowledge traditions. It shows that central to their traditional systems of thought and belief was the concept of ''time-force'', which may once have formed part of a wider, shared, regional culture. The study presents a number of new findings about the cultural history of the Oromo. With maps, diagrams, photographs, glossary and index.

From the author of the Samuel Johnson prize-shortlisted 'Return of a King', the romantic and ultimately tragic tale of a passionate love affair that transcended all the cultural, religious and political boundaries of its time.James Achilles Kirkpatrick was the British Resident at the court of Hyderabad when he met Khair un-Nissa - 'Most Excellent among Women' - the great-niece of the Prime Minister of Hyderabad. He fell in love with her and overcame many obstacles to marry her, converting to Islam and, according to Indian sources, becoming a double-agent working against the East India Company. It is a remarkable story, but such things were not unknown: from the early sixteenth century to the eve of the Indian Mutiny, the 'white Mughals' who wore local dress and adopted Indian ways were a source of embarrassment to successive colonial administrations. Dalrymple unearths such colourful figures as 'Hindoo Stuart', who travelled with his own team of Brahmins to maintain his temple of idols, and Sir David Auchterlony, who took all 13 of his Indian wives out for evening promenades, each on the back of her own elephant. In 'White Mughals', William Dalrymple discovers a world almost entirely unexplored by history, and places at its centre a compelling tale of seduction and betrayal.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERINTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER In the seminal text on atheism in the twenty-first centuy, renowned scientist Richard Dawkins examines the irrationality of believing in God and the grievous harm religion has inflicted on society. From the sex-obsessed tyrant in the Old Testament to the more benign Celestial Watchmaker favored by some Enlightenment thinkers, Dawkins rigorously analyzes God in all his forms, eviscerating the major arguments for religion and demonstrating the supreme improbability of a supreme being. His argument steeped in impressive historical and contemporary evidence, spanning from the Crusades to 9/11, Dawkins shows how religion fuels war and foments bigotry, and makes the compelling case that belief in God is not just wrong but potentially deadly. As a solution, Dawkins offers exhilarating insight into the advantages of atheism for the individual and society, not the least of which is a clearer, truer appreciation of the universe's wonders than any faith could ever muster.

In direct and experiential language, Dzogchen Pema Kalsang Rinpoche explains clearly how to put Shabkar''s classic verses on trekch├╢ meditation into practice, so we may realise the true nature of mind. These profound instructions may only be read by those who have been authorised and empowered into the main Dzogchen practices by a genuine master."For a living breathing human being, is there anyone to whom thoughts do not arise? Thoughts occur, but it does not matter. Thoughts are the dynamic energy of true nature. If they arise, allow them to arise. If they do not occur, allow them not to occur. When abiding, this is the essence of true nature. When thoughts stream forth, this is the manifest dynamic energy of wisdom. Do not pursue thoughts. If we chase after them we become confused, like water turning into ice. Leave thoughts naturally and they become self-liberated. Unload the mental burden of activities and remain in unwavering equipoise of effortless non-meditation."One of the most eminent lamas in Tibet, Dzogchen Pema Kalsang Rinpoche is widely recognised as a brilliant scholar and highly realised master of the Great Perfection. His insight brings an authenticity to the teachings which can only be present in the words of a realised master.

  • - Taoism, Ch'an, and Original Zen
    av David Hinton
    269,-

A beautifully compelling and liberating guide to the original nature of Zen in ancient China by renowned author and translator David Hinton.Buddhism migrated from India to China in the first century C.E., and Ch'an (Japanese: Zen) is generally seen as China's most distinctive and enduring form of Buddhism. In China Root, however, David Hinton shows how Ch'an was in fact a Buddhist-influenced extension of Taoism, China's native system of spiritual philosophy. Unlike Indian Buddhism's abstract sensibility, Ch'an was grounded in an earthy and empirically-based vision. Exploring this vision, Hinton describes Ch'an as a kind of anti-Buddhism. A radical and wild practice aspiring to a deeply ecological liberation: the integration of individual consciousness with landscape and with a Cosmos seen as harmonious and alive. In China Root, Hinton describes this original form of Zen with his trademark clarity and elegance, each chapter exploring in enlightening ways a core Ch'an concept--such as meditation, mind, Buddha, awakening--as it was originally understood and practiced in ancient China. Finally, by examining a range of standard translations in the Appendix, Hinton reveals how this original understanding and practice of Ch'an/Zen is almost entirely missing in contemporary American Zen, because it was lost in Ch'an's migration from China through Japan and on to the West.Whether you practice Zen or not, taking this journey on the wings of Hinton's remarkable insight and powerful writing will transform how you understand yourself and the world.

  • - The Path of Liberation through Anger
    av Lama Rod Owens
    219

In the face of systemic racism and state-sanctioned violence, how can we metabolize our anger into a force for liberation?White supremacy in the United States has long necessitated that Black rage be suppressed, repressed, or denied, often as a means of survival, a literal matter of life and death. In Love and Rage, Lama Rod Owens, coauthor of Radical Dharma, shows how this unmetabolized anger--and the grief, hurt, and transhistorical trauma beneath it--needs to be explored, respected, and fully embodied to heal from heartbreak and walk the path of liberation. This is not a book about bypassing anger to focus on happiness, or a road map for using spirituality to transform the nature of rage into something else. Instead, it is one that offers a potent vision of anger that acknowledges and honors its power as a vehicle for radical social change and enduring spiritual transformation.Love and Rage weaves the inimitable wisdom and lived experience of Lama Rod Owens with Buddhist philosophy, practical meditation exercises, mindfulness, tantra, pranayama, ancestor practices, energy work, and classical yoga. The result is a book that serves as both a balm and a blueprint for those seeking justice who can feel overwhelmed with anger--and yet who refuse to relent. It is a necessary text for these times.

  • - a New Clinical Approach
    av Joseph Nicolosi
    445

Reparative Therapy of Male Homosexuality is the first of a series of books by the late Dr. Joseph Nicolosi, originator of Reparative Therapy (TM). In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Nicolosi describes the patterns of family relationships--particularly the "Triadic Narcissistic Relationship"--which so often contribute to the psychological traumas that typically disrupt the normal process of masculine identification experienced by pre-adolescent males. An eminent and pioneering clinician, Dr. Nicolosi dedicated his professional life to helping men who are suffering from unwanted same-sex attractions (SSA) resume the journey toward full masculine identification that was interrupted during childhood.Dr. Nicolosi believed that the human being is designed for heterosexuality, and that departures from that norm are inherently problematic. According to reparative-drive theory, we are romantically drawn to the gender we do not identify with: in simple terms, the "exotic"--that which is unfamiliar and exciting--takes on erotic significance. Homosexual attractions are a "reparative drive"-- an attempt to fulfill the normal male-bonding needs that were unmet during childhood. By de-mystifying maleness and other men, the client can resume his journey into full masculine identification and begin to explore his heterosexual potential.Dr. Nicolosi's humane, insightful and non-judgmental approach to gender-affirmative psychotherapy does not pretend to "cure"--i.e.,erase--all homosexual feelings, but it has helped thousands of non-gay homosexual men understand the source of their SSA, develop confidence in their masculinity, and promote non-erotic same-sex relationships, which in turn diminishes the erotic feelings they have toward other men, thus leaving room for the natural development of heterosexual attractions and, ultimately, satisfactory heterosexual relationships.

  • - The climax of World War II's greatest naval campaign
    av Mark Lardas
    245

This illustrated study explores, in detail, the climactic events of the Battle of the Atlantic, and how air power proved to be the Allies'' most important submarine-killer in one of the most bitterly fought naval campaigns of World War II.As 1942 opened, both Nazi Germany and the Allies were ready for the climactic battles of the Atlantic to begin. Germany had 91 operational U-boats, and over 150 in training or trials. Production for 1942ΓÇô44 was planned to exceed 200 boats annually. Karl D├╢nitz, running the Kriegsmarine''s U-boat arm, would finally have the numbers needed to run the tonnage war he wanted against the Allies.Meanwhile, the British had, at last, assembled the solution to the U-boat peril. Its weapons and detection systems had improved to the stage that maritime patrol aircraft could launch deadly attacks on U-boats day and night. Airborne radar, Leigh lights, Magnetic Anomaly Detection (MAD), and the Fido homing torpedo all turned the anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft into a submarine-killer, while shore and ship-based technologies such as high-frequency direction finding and signals intelligence could now help aircraft find enemy U-boats. Following its entry into the war in 1941, the United States had also thrown its industrial muscle behind the campaign, supplying VLR Liberator bombers to the RAF and escort carriers to the Royal Navy. The US Navy also operated anti-submarine patrol blimps and VLR aircraft in the southern and western Atlantic, and sent its own escort carriers to guard convoys. This book, the second of two volumes, explores the climactic events of the Battle of the Atlantic, and reveals how air power ΓÇô both maritime patrol aircraft, and carrier aircraft ΓÇô ultimately proved to be the Allies'' most important weapon in one of the most bitterly fought naval campaigns of World War II.

  • av Silvia Federici
    245

Written between 1974 and 2012, Revolution at Point Zero collects forty years of research and theorising on the nature of housework, social reproduction, and women's struggles on this terrain - to escape it, to better its conditions, to reconstruct it in ways that provide an alternative to capitalist relations. Indeed, as Federici reveals, behind the capitalist organisation of work and the contradictions inherent in alienated labour is an explosive ground zero for revolutionary practice upon which are decided the daily realities of our collective reporduction. Beginning with Federici's organisational work in the Wages for Housework movement, the essays collected here unravel the power and politics of wide but related issues including the international restructuring of reproductive works and its effects on the sexual division of labour, the globalisation of care work and sex work, the crisis of elder care, the development of affective labour, and the politics of the commons. this new and expanded edition contains two previously unpublished essays by the authors.
