A TELEGRAPH BOOK OF THE YEARWhen everyday life becomes a state of emergency, how can yesterday's words suffice?'We were so happy and didn't know it...'A thirty-three-year-old writer lives in a quiet European suburb with his wife and his dog. His parents have bought an apartment nearby. On weekends they go out for brunch, cook and see friends. Life is good; it is normal. Then the invaders come. The Language of War is about what happens when your world changes overnight. When you wake up to the sound of helicopters and the smell of gunpowder. When your home is hit by shells or broken into by gunmen, and you spend another night in a basement-turned-bomb shelter. When, even though you've never held a weapon before, you realise the only choice is to fight back. It is about things one can never forget, or forgive.Bringing together Oleksandr Mykhed's vivid day-by-day chronicles of the invasion of Ukraine with a chorus of other voices - his family, friends in exile, those who have fought and have witnessed unimaginable atrocities - this book is both a record, and a reckoning. Haunting and timeless, it asks how it is possible to find the words to describe a new reality; how you can still make sense of the world when the only language you can speak is the language of war.

I would like to take a few minutes to introduce myself and how I acquired these letters. My name is Steve Lawler and I am an avid history buff, antique picker and have been researching Civil War for 30 years. Myself and Neal (Mac) McBrayer were doing maintenance on our 12 lb Napoleon Cannon at Kelly Ranch near Alpine, AL. some 5 or 6 years ago. There was this trailer there and of course it caught my eye. I looked inside and it was full of boxes and books. I got to looking through the boxes and I found items from as far back as WW1. To make a long story short I was able to purchase the contents from Charles Kelly. As myself and Mac were going through the boxes and trunks, I came across these letters. I couldn't put them down. They were from Captain Kelly to his wife Amie. Nearly all the letters started with My Dear Amie hence the title of the letters. I couldn't bring myself to keep the letters. I gave them back to Charles and asked if I could take them with me and transcribe them. He agreed and a year and a half later I finally got done transcribing them. They are full of tragedies of war, humorous accounts and what Amie needed to do in keeping the farm up and running. If you are history buffs or needing to read the true account of the Civil War you will hear it from someone who lived through it day by day.

When results Do not conform, we look for causes.Lesson learned: When information is clear, concise and valid, conforming results are the norm.An organization's workforce is comprised of information creators and information users. To achieve the highest levels of information integrity, creators and users must work as teams.CMII is a process that accommodates change and keeps information clear, concise and valid. Each document is co-owned by its assigned creator and one or more designated users. With CMII, each work flow is jointly owned by its 3-member team of creators and users.I am pleased to acknowledge that CMII-certified graduates are highly proficient in these matters.About the AuthorThe first half of this autobiography covers my experiences and lessons learned from 1934 to 1986. The second half is about the company that I founded in 1986 and the excitement that was created in the configuration management (CM) profession. Thanks to break-through methods discovered in my first four jobs after college, I founded a company to continue advancing the state-of-the art and teach my improved techniques to practitioners. I gave my advanced CM process a name: CMIl (2) .Most organizations were struggling with schedule, quality and cost problems and we were all looking for solutions. I found them where no one else was looking - in the domain of configuration management. From 1986 through 2016, over 10,000 configuration management and quality assurance (QA) professionals from industry and government agencies around the world completed my training. They continue to be on the leading edge of innovation within their respective environments .A major purpose of this autobiography is to clarify the differences between traditional CM and CMIl and reinvigorate the CMIl movement. Students pursuing CM training must choose between the two. This book serves to help them make that choice.

Deborah Sampson was a young woman who enlisted and served in the Continental Army during the American War of Independence; this biography tells her remarkable story.Born in 1760 in the town of Plympton, Massachusetts, Sampson and her family strived through hardship, their poverty worsening after Deborah's father abandoned them. In her formative years, Deborah helped maintain the household; bright and capable, she became literate thanks to committed readings of the Bible with a local widow, becoming proficient at several practical skills such as weaving and carpentry. These abilities would later prove useful in her army service. The rebellion of the Thirteen Colonies against British rule shook the region. Deborah's sense of duty extended to the fight for independence; disguising her gender, she enlisted to the army early in 1782. Her initial service was short; a chapter of the Baptist church discovered her and threatened disavowal. By May 1782 she had enlisted a second time in a different regiment; in total she served a total of 17 months with valor; treatment for injuries sustained revealed her gender, and she was honorably discharged. In the modern day, Deborah Sampson is an icon of patriotism and for women's right to military service. After the war she gave lectures on her soldiery and was awarded a military pension.

The writer Mikhail Soloviev is one of the most prominent Soviet writers who chose freedom under incredibly difficult circumstances. This work is a unique and truthful description of the greatest upheaval of our time - the three decades of the Russian Revolution. Essentially, the book is the autobiographical account of the author, Mikhail Soloviev, about his experiences during Stalin's time in the Soviet Union. Through his eyes we see the pain of a generation and the crucifixion of an entire nation. The core of this wonderful book is the author's chosen direction of life and the nation's hopes for the future. The events of Stalin's time are told vividly; in the descriptions of the events, you can already see indications of the future development of the country's history and the solutions of the current Russian leadership. The coercive measures of a government with no regard for human life put Soloviev's love for his country to the test. Hatred of Stalin's regime grows and eventually leads him to choose freedom in the West when the opportunity arises. The work is full of scenes, action and death, passion, and tenderness, it has unforgettable characters and it is illuminated by a humble faith in human dignity and the innermost power of the spirit.
