Based on a true story, a young American soldier fighting in the Vietnam War meets a beautiful Vietnamese woman on his base. Their relationship develops into a full romance leading to an engagement, but the turmoil of the times and their parental opposition leads to heavy resistance. Fellow soldiers and officers attempt to talk him out of the marriage, but the two are determined to marry, despite the ongoing war.Destiny has its hand against it, as the US Army sends the soldier home to finish his service stateside, leaving his Vietnamese fiancee in-country with his promise to her, "I'll come back for you." When he settles into his new assignment in the United States, his letters to her go unanswered. As months go by, he is concerned for her safety in the war and launches an on-base search for her as he contacts embassies, consulates, and a US senator, as well as a chaplain still in Vietnam. When this search through established channels fails to locate her, she is considered officially missing somewhere in Vietnam. Remembering his promise, he begins preparation to return to Vietnam and find her to deliver on his promise to marry her. His search takes him as far south as the Mekong Delta, as far west as the Cambodian border, before crossing enemy lines in the Central Highlands, where he finally finds her.His only problem now is, he has to fight to get her back. She has been promised to another man in an arranged marriage. Worse than this, he has discovered her father as part of the Viet Cong. His resistance to let her go leads to a confrontation between himself and the enemy.

A compelling and fascinating portrait of the continuing intellectual tradition of Greek writers and thinkers in the Age of Rome.In 146 BC, Greece yielded to the military might of the Roman Republic; sixty years later, when Athens and other Greek city-states rebelled against Rome, the general Lucius Cornelius Sulla destroyed the city of Socrates and Plato, laying waste to the famous Academy where Aristotle had studied. However, the traditions of Greek cultural life would continue to flourish during the centuries of Roman rule that followed, in the lives and work of a distinguished array of philosophers, doctors, scientists, geographers, travellers and theologians.Charles Freeman's accounts of such luminaries as the physician Galen, the geographer Ptolemy and the philosopher Plotinus are interwoven with contextual 'interludes' that showcase a sequence of unjustly neglected and richly influential lives. Like the author's The Awakening, The Children of Athena is a cultural history on an epic scale: the story of a rich and vibrant tradition of Greek intellectual inquiry across a period of more than five hundred years, from the second century BC to the start of the fifth century AD.

How Robespierre's career and legacy embody the dangerous contradictions of democracyMaximilien Robespierre (1758-1794) is arguably the most controversial and contradictory figure of the French Revolution, inspiring passionate debate like no other protagonist of those dramatic and violent events. The fervor of those who defend Robespierre the "e;Incorruptible,"e; who championed the rights of the people, is met with revulsion by those who condemn him as the bloodthirsty tyrant who sent people to the guillotine. Marcel Gauchet argues that he was both, embodying the glorious achievement of liberty as well as the excesses that culminated in the Terror. In much the same way that 1789 and 1793 symbolize the two opposing faces of the French Revolution, Robespierre's contradictions were the contradictions of the revolution itself. Robespierre was its purest incarnation, neither the defender of liberty who fell victim to the corrupting influence of power nor the tyrant who betrayed the principles of the revolution. Gauchet shows how Robespierre's personal transition from opposition to governance was itself an expression of the tragedy inherent in a revolution whose own prophetic ideals were impossible to implement. This panoramic book tells the story of how the man most associated with the founding of modern French democracy was also the first tyrant of that democracy, and it offers vital lessons for all democracies about the perpetual danger of tyranny.

  • - Thrilling Personal Reminiscences from a Fighter Pilot and Leader

    189,-

A veteran RAF fighter pilot reflects on his service in the sky during the Cold War, the Gulf War, and more in this exciting memoir.Rick Peacock-Edwards has led different lives at different times, but through it all, he has consistently enjoyed himself. One of three sons of outstanding South African Battle of Britain pilot F/O S R "e;Teddy"e; Peacock-Edwards, Rick has a compassionate regard for a generation of wartime aircrew: "e;As the proud son of one of the "e;Few,"e; their selfless daring has inspired me throughout my life. Importantly, they influenced my decision to become an airman in the Royal Air Force, to become a fighter pilot like my father, and to live life with spirit as they had lived their lives. It is essential that their experiences live on."e; Rate of Climb, his original and entertaining biography, drawing on previously unpublished family and archival material, shows Rick in complete command of his primary subject: flying. A leading ex-RAF fighter pilot to his fingertips, he flew the Lightning, Phantom, Tornado F2/3 and other high-performance aircraft, and served in senior-ranking positions in the UK, Germany and the US. During a varied and distinguished career, he was closely associated with the Eurofighter Typhoon programme and was appointed as the Royal Air Force Inspector of Flight Safety. He ably demonstrated his uncommon skill and determined leadership during the Cold War era, first Gulf War and elsewhere. A past master of The Honourable Company of Air Pilots, he is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and the immediate past vice chairman of the Royal Air Force Club in London. He is equally as engaged in his post-RAF career as he was when a serving officer. This is an action-packed account of a foremost flyer's life with endless good stories, and a colourful cast of characters to match. Rick's compelling recollections in Rate of Climb reveal a life of considerable achievement, in a very personal book capturing the ties of airmanship that the author has been privileged to share. A must for all lovers of derring-do in the air.

Until the end of the Cold War in 1990, the RAF had several major bases worldwide - largely in those areas where the service had been based during the inter-war years. In Cold War Boys Overseas contributors recall their time at these foreign destinations. With almost half of RAF personnel serving abroad in the 1960s situated throughout Germany, the book starts its focus there with tales of monitoring the Soviet threat. The stories then advance to the warmer climates of the Near East and Far East where different challenges awaited those serving there. As the period progressed RAF squadrons saw changes to their equipment with Hunters, Javelins and Canberras being replaced by a new generation of combat aircraft such as the Buccaneer, Harrier, Jaguar, Phantom and Vulcan. Innovation of missile defense and the expansion of the role of helicopters were also critical at this time. How this affected the RAF is told by the aircrew and ground crew who served then. The stories that feature in the book reveal just how serving overseas was a different way of life and the chapters illustrate the many facets of the RAF's capabilities across the globe. They also highlight a lifestyle that no longer exists in today's RAF. Buckle up and allow the Cold War Boys to take you on a thrilling adventure across the globe.

Narendra Modi is the prime minister of India. He is extremely popular with the country's 1 billion Hindu majority, but not so with the 200 million strong Muslim minority. How has this happenstance occurred? MODI: AN EXPOSE explains in detail. We must thank the author for chronicling what is to my mind the most critical decade of Indian history -- AAKAR PATEL, Chair, Amnesty International India. A fascinating book that has ably compressed many eras of Indian political scene around Modi. In a simple and well reasoned flow of events brightened by use of inventive vocabulary ( such as miscegenation & a few more ) and cogent expressions of detachment in analysis ( such as 'But India's opposition must study Modi's behavior to see if they can glean anything from it in order to help them') are going to keep the spirit of readers high on both sides of a divided spectrum. The book has almost everything that a fast track professional needs on his fingertips to be well meaning in academic and social cliques. This is the book which is needed right now by every non-resident Indian, foreigners as well as resident-Indians since curiosity and tempers are running high to get to the right pic of an intriguing personality who camouflages hermit and the heist with apt dramatics. The book is a concise thesis of research starting with the basic tools of history necessary to dissect embedded crevices of ethnic divides which Indian social life has carried forward in its own casual and loving way of life but which was turned into a fodder for power by the RSS-BJP. The book has also not left out the gulf of trust between the RSS and BJP and this has been said with evidence and much authentic findings which match the Navjeevan Press Ahmedabad archives of letters exchanged by Sardar Patel, Nehru and Golwalkar. I felt that before the current political power holders lay their hands over that archival wealth, these basic facts need to surface in as many writings. Much of Modi understanding comes from fearlessly and impartially brought out archival communication between Nehru- Patel government and the emerging RSS tentacles in independent India. The author has bridged the past with current performance of Modi regime. Not a soul that touched Modi is missing from Amit Shah to Jaitley or even organizations and groups that impacted on decisions which were taken from time to time be it Adani or Ambani. However, readers may be provoked to know why Jashodaben has gone missing in the book since the author provides a cover of some higher ideals on Modi's act of irresponsibility towards a woman he married at an adult age of 18. His blatant casualness towards gender discrimination and sexual harassment in higher offices such as the Judges's chamber ie Gogoi case and many cases against men who turned saffron to escape legal action in universities and state governments (UP, MP cases of women home administrators) coupled with Gau-Shala led land grabbing while live cow export goes sky rocketing... are enigmas to his personality which is attempting to compete Nehru on a global scene! His cautious and calculated respect towards women's empowerment while surrounded by canon mouthing Smriti Irani and Nirmala Sitharaman after clouds over Pragya and Uma Bharti. He oversteps the boundaries constructed by RSS and turns increasingly mocking against bolder versions such as the Bengal's Mamata Banerjee and Mahua Moitra. I have enjoyed the book thoroughly for its readability and immensely connected and well researched information put together in a simple yet intellectually high breed expressions to serve a modern reader. Will provoke and attract everyone to read it across the world. Maybe, to reach more hands some titles can be slightly amended to not be so direct. Amita Singh(Professor rtd. • - How Irish reunification took place and what happened afterwards

    179,-

Written from the perspective of 2040, 15 years after Irish re-unification, this is a memoir by a young English journalist who ends up falling in love with an Irishwoman, Ireland, its people, and its politics. It gives a personal account of how a Border Poll was called, why it was carried, and what happened afterwards. It traces the development of a unified Irish state over a 15 year transition period and looks at how it all turned out, from a variety of points of view in Ireland and Britain. The Good Friday Agreement is silent on what happens after a border poll is carried. This book attempts to fill that gap in an informative, challenging, engaging, and amusing way. It does not assume anything is "inevitable" but rather the consequence of the good and bad actions of the various actors involved. Indeed, it is a homage to what good politics can achieve. PLEASE NOTE: This book is often listed as "unavailable" on Amazon.co.uk for prospective Irish customers, according to Amazon due to Brexit related export/import complications. It should always be available on Amazon.com, Amazon.de, Amazon.es, or another European Marketplace. Let us hope there will soon be an Amazon.ie, or even an Amazon.eu!
