  • - Community and Commemoration on Norway's Utøya
    av Jørgen Watne Frydnes
    355 - 1 145

On July 22, 2011, a white supremacist killed eight people at Oslo's Government Center in Norway and then terrorized the idyllic island of Utøya, where he executed sixty-nine more people, mostly teenagers. The country had never suffered such a massacre, and in the aftermath, the entire population was reeling. Utøya, the Norwegian Labor Party's summer camp for youth, a beloved place where many Norwegians learned about democratic values and processes, made lifelong friendships, and developed a vision for a just society, became mired in grief and discord. When Jørgen Watne Frydnes took on the daunting task of rebuilding the island and charting its future, he had to figure out a compassionate and just way forward. He made a radical decision: he set out to talk with each family of a murdered person, seeking to understand their needs and their hopes so that the future of the island could include their wishes and concerns. This emotionally grueling work, which was never considered in the scholarly literature on commemoration, led to a true renewal of Utøya, resulting in a meaningful memorial to those who were lost as well as beautiful surroundings for campers who come there to study democracy and peace. Frydnes's narrative, originally published in Norwegian, is structured around the seasons of the year and the landscape of the island, and tracks one person's account of learning how to remember, commemorate, and honor the dead, and acknowledge a mass tragedy, and yet also create a nurturing, aspirational space for hope.

  • - Three True Stories of Scoundrels and Schemers
    av Peggy Adler
    395,-

In 1991, Peggy Adler, author of Trilogy: Three True Stories of Scoundrels and Schemers, was retained by self-proclaimed CIA agent, arms dealer and money launderer, Richard Brenneke, to co-author his autobiography. She soon discovered evidence in his files contradicting claims regarding his presence at October Surprise conspiracy meetings and went on to out Brenneke as a con artist in a February 1992 article in the Village Voice. Adler then researched a series of additional articles for the "Voice", which went on to prove that the so-called "October Surprise" was a hoax. In mid-1992, upon learning that the United States House of Representatives had created a Task Force to Investigate Certain Allegations Concerning the Holding of American Hostages by Iran in 1980, which would be investigating whether or not there actually had been an "October Surprise", she turned over to them the seventy cartons of documents she'd hauled east from Brenneke's home in Portland, Oregon, in order to write his memoirs. Subsequently, she worked as a consultant to the Task Force and assisted in drafting and editing the Brenneke section of their final report. Chapter one of this book recounts the Brenneke story, from 1973 forward, including her own odyssey with this scoundrel. Chapter two reveals how Oliver North and Richard Secord's Iran-Contra pal, Albert Hakim, was well aware that it was possible to get money out of a Swiss bank account without ever being a signatory - for he'd facilitated just that, years before. And Chapter three traces Roger Ailes relationship to the Willie Horton commercial that helped sink George Dukakis' hope for the presidency. Additionally, the book is laden with all the necessary documentation to back up what Adler has written.

  • - America's First Politician
    av James Bradley
    465,-

A new biography of the 8th president of the United States, the first chief executive not born a British citizen and the first to use the party system to chart his way from tavern-keeper's son to the pinnacle of power. Martin Van Buren was one of the most remarkable politicians not only of his time but in American presidential history. The principal architect of the party system and one of the founders of the Democratic Party, he came to dominate New York-then the most influential state in the Union-and was instrumental in electing Andrew Jackson president. Van Buren's skills as a political strategist were unparalleled (he was known as the "Little Magician"), winning him a series of high-profile offices: US senator, New York's governor, US secretary of state, US vice president, and finally the White House. In his rise to power, Van Buren sought consensus and conciliation, bending to the wishes of slave interests and complicit in the dispossession of America's Indigenous population--two of the darkest chapters in American history. This new biography of Van Buren -- the first full-scale portrait in four decades -- charts his ascent from a tavern in the Hudson Valley to the presidency, concluding with his late-career involvement in an antislavery movement. Offering vivid profiles of the day's leading figures (Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay, John C. Calhoun, John Quincy Adams, DeWitt Clinton, James K. Polk), James Bradley's book depicts the struggle for power in the tumultuous decades leading up to the Civil War.

Wolf's narrative is a relentless pursuit of truth amidst the chaos and sorrow that drowned the nation after Kennedy's fall in Dallas. Wolf doesn't tiptoe around the controversies; he faces them head-on, challenging the concocted narratives and the mass skepticism that have blurred the lines between myth and reality. The assassination is not just a historical event to Wolf; it's a pivotal clash that reshaped the battleground of American identity, governance, and trust. He lays bare the scars it left on the national psyche, transforming governance and media, embedding a culture of conspiracy and doubt deep into the American ethos. It's a rallying cry for the patriots, historians, and the eternally curious, a kindle book that illuminates the past to understand the present better.Wolf not only reconstructs the day that shook America to its core but also maps the psychological battlefield that ensued. "Beyond the Grassy Knoll" dives into the heart of a nation grappling with the specter of disbelief, where the line between patriot and skeptic blurs in the shadow of tragedy. With acute precision, Wolf charts the course of American history from a juncture that could have spelled disintegration but instead fostered a complex legacy of resilience and inquiry. This addition to the narrative is a stark reminder: in the quest for truth, the American spirit proves indomitable, persisting through the mists of conspiracy and the tests of time, ever in pursuit of its foundational ideals." Co-authors of the pamphlet "Deportation: Its Meaning and Menace" are Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman, well-known activists in the early 20th-century radical and anarchist movements in the United States. The 1919 pamphlet tackles the contentious topic of deportation, discussing its ramifications and opposing its abuse as a means of quashing political dissent. The concept of deportation is scrutinized by the writers, who highlight its possible harm to civil liberties and its application as a tool for suppressing political activists and immigrants whom the government judged undesirable. They draw attention to particular incidents and situations in which deportation was used to quell opposition, frequently focusing on those who held extreme political views. Deportation, according to Berkman and Goldman, violates the values of justice and democracy and is a threat to the rights of expression, assembly, and association. They urge readers to oppose the improper use of deportation as a tool against people who have radical or unpopular opinions and instead support a more equitable and humanitarian strategy for dealing with political dissent.

  • - Powerful Poems for Your Pocket Collection: Post-Pandemic Predicaments
    av Carol J Graham
    299,-

As the pandemic lessened its grip on the world, we have all been living through an extraordinary time in history. The start of Putin's brutal war on its peaceful Ukrainian neighbor, the devastating Gaza conflict, soaring inflation due in large part to inefficiencies created by the pandemic, dramatic increases in interest rates to combat the inflation, and the struggle by corporations to force employees out of their home offices and back to their cubicles, are just some of the significant events and situations that have occurred. But we are also experiencing the truly unprecedented prosecution of the reality TV star turned White House occupant for his alleged attempts to overturn a legitimate election and illegally hoard highly classified documents. Each of these topics would require many publications to cover them in any level of detail. The purpose of this book is to provide an overview of many of the events that have occurred since the end of the pandemic in the form of historical, fact-based poetry with a touch of humor sprinkled throughout. Some of the topics covered are the Trump attempted coup, Trump's 91 felony charges, Trump's denial of 2020 election loss, Trump's disregard for the law, post-pandemic problems, women's rights, racism, civil rights abuses, and Republican speakership elections. Each of us has our own unique set of experiences from the post-pandemic period, but we have also, in certain ways, lived through many of these events together. It is the author's hope that the series of historical poems presented here will serve as a brief summary of this extraordinary period.

  • - The Unbelievable Story of Major Charles Carpenter and Rosie the Rocketer
    av James P Busha
    319 - 385,-

Major Charles Carpenter made headlines during the Second World War when he affixed six bazookas to his tiny Piper L-4 observation plane and began attacking German tanks. "Bazooka Charlie" and his plane "Rosie the Rocketer" were profiled in a variety of military and civilian publications, including the iconic Stars & Stripes. The major was a high school educator in the civilian world, teaching history and coaching football. Carpenter was talented, highly intelligent, and athletically gifted, but the war truly tested him. In 1945, the dashing pilot was forced out of the cockpit and into a hospital bed by Hodgkin's lymphoma, which was discovered in his neck. In addition to the enemy and terminal cancer, Carpenter also battled cynicism and guilt, particularly in regard to the state of his marriage, which was on the brink of failure by the time he returned home from Europe. Charles Carpenter died in 1966, having resumed his career, salvaged his marriage, and long outlived the timeline afforded him by his doctors in the initial prognosis. This revealing biography of the famous pilot was made possible through the collaboration of noted aviation author and magazine editor Jim Busha, and Carpenter's daughter, Carol Apacki. Along with memories of her father in his postwar years, Carol provided a treasure trove of wartime correspondence between Charles and his wife, Elda Carpenter.

Show Me Justice tracks the life and career of the late civil-rights advocate and pioneer Alvin Lee Sykes, who used his self-taught legal knowledge to reopen the dormant murder case of Emmett Till. He was also tenacious in his investigation of other unsolved murder cases of African Americans from the civil-rights era.Typically, the people Sykes represented were as poor as he was-"poor as a church mouse," to quote former United States senator Tom Coburn, who worked with Alvin on the Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act. In this book's foreword, Ronnique Hawkins, co-producer of The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till and founder of The ALM and Learn My History foundations, writes: "From jazz singer Steve Harvey to the monumental case of fourteen-year-old Emmett Till, Alvin championed for victims like they were family."Sykes was born to a fourteen-year-old girl and placed by relatives in the care of another woman who worked as a domestic and a beautician. She recognized his strong curiosity about the world around him and stretched her meager budget to supply books and musical instruments. She mortgaged her home to pay the bills to treat his epilepsy and other childhood illnesses. As a young teenager, he spent time at Boys Town in Nebraska, but his formal education never extended beyond the eighth grade. Instead, as he says, his secondary and higher education took place in public libraries, often among shelves of law books. In Sykes's hometown of Kansas City, and nationwide, he remains a legend among the downtrodden whom he helped and also among the powerful who admired his efforts. He marshaled his facts, framed his arguments persuasively, and acted patiently and resolutely. Always, his goal was justice. Typically, he reached that goal.
