""Starting his reign in 1927, Alexander Alekhine dominated the world of elite chess for more than a decade. To this day, he is the only world chess champion to die while holding the title. On his way to the top, Alekhine dodged artillery on World War I battlefields, narrowly escaped a Bolshevik firing squad and negotiated with Nazis to escape occupied Paris. He also earned a reputation as a "grandmonster" of chess: arrogant, amoral and alcoholic. This book explores both the triumphs that established Alekhine as one of the most creative minds ever to storm the chess world and the tragic choices that ended his career and, finally, his life. He is still one of the most controversial figures in chess history, but competitive chess as we know it would not exist without him"--

Dafydd Elis-Thomas, The Rt Hon. the Lord Elis-Thomas of Nant Conwy, is an outstanding Welsh public figure. His political career spans from his first election as a Westminster MP for Plaid Cymru in 1974 at the age of twenty-seven, until May 2021 when he finally retired after twenty-two years of service as a member of the Senedd in Cardiff. Both controversial and magnetic, his life is captured in this biography. He has been branded a 'maverick', an 'intellectual acrobat' and a 'political chameleon' - as well as being labelled a 'terrorist' for his interventions in Northern Ireland, and a 'traitor' for opposing nationalism. As the first Presiding Officer of the National Assembly for Wales, he helped stabilise the new institution and embedded devolution during its first tentative decade. His career has often been marked by controversy, and this is what makes his story remarkable - just as his political life has proved to be unpredictable.

Ernest Evans and his ship USS Johnston (DD-557) are legendary for their exploits in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Evans is an intriguing character in a number of ways, including his Native American heritage, and the USS Johnston under Evans—he was the sole commander from commissioning to sinking—served in various campaigns and operations prior to the action off Samar that earned him the Medal of Honor. The ship was active in the Carolines and bombarded the beaches at Kwajalein and Eniwetok and (with two other destroyers) sank a sub off Bougainville (earning Evans a Bronze Star). She also was active at Guam and Peleliu. Thomas Cutler brings both Evans and USS Johnston to life in a manner that places them into the context of the greater Pacific War but keeps the focus on these two relatively small—but ultimately so significant—entities. A ship and her captain are nothing without the crew, and the author ensures that—despite his larger-than-life status—Evans is portrayed as part of that larger “organism,” with appropriate emphasis on the other members of the crew.

This biography explores the fascinating trajectory of amateur naturalist Frank Farley (1870-1949), who in the first half of the twentieth century made significant contributions to the fields of ornithology and environmental conservation. An enthusiastic booster for rural development in western Canada, and Camrose, Alberta, in particular, Farley was also a passionate naturalist at a time when few others held such views. He supported and managed newly designated migratory bird sanctuaries, networked with expert ornithologists across the continent, mentored young people (including famous Canadian writer and grand-nephew Farley Mowat), and published widely to scientific and popular audiences. The book's description of Farley's career shows how a single individual can make substantive contributions to wildlife conservation while acknowledging tensions between amateur and professional ornithologists. The wide range of activities in which Farley engaged shows the complexities of rural life in Alberta and also reveals that concern over environmental change is not new. Frank Farley and the Birds of Alberta adds a stimulating new layer to a complex western Canadian past, and is an invaluable resource for scholars and readers versed in Canadian environmental history, climate change, and ecological activism.

For years Robert Newton Baskin (1837-1918) may have been the most hated man in Utah. Yet his promotion of federal legislation against polygamy in the late 1800s and his work to bring the Mormon territory into a republican form of government were pivotal in Utah's achievement of statehood. The results of his efforts also contributed to the acceptance of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by the American public. In this engaging biography--the first full-length analysis of the man--author John Gary Maxwell presents Baskin as the unsung father of modern Utah. As Maxwell shows, Baskin's life was defined by conflict and paradox.
