  • - The Making of a Writer
    av Dan Wakefield
    169

The first and only YA biography of the great American novelist and humanist and author of such classics as Slaughterhouse Five. Now in Paperback. "Mr. Wakefield's account of Vonnegut's life is funny and tender, the kind of book that will leave you bruised and happy and reverberating a little, as if you are a piano that someone has just finished playing." --Meghan Cox Gurdon, Wall Street Journal Kurt Vonnegut, author of Slaughterhouse Five, Breakfast of Champions, Cat's Cradle, and many other brilliant novels and short stories, is one of our greatest American writers, often using science fiction, humor, and a humanist view of society, religion, politics, and human nature in his writing to show us the absurdity and the loveliness of life on earth. Born in 1922, Vonnegut's life was full of great fortune and great despair: his family was wealthy, but lost everyting in the market crash of 1929; he was the youngest son in a loving family, until his mother fell into a depression and committed suicide; he joined the army in WWII with great pride for our country, but experienced instead a world of destruction and horror. These and many others were the experiences that made him a writer. But how did he channel the highs and lows of his life into great writing? Dan Wakefield, a friend and mentee of Vonnegut's for decades and a fellow Hoosier, distills the facts including Kurt's novels, essays, interviews, letters and personal experiences, into a beautiful telling of the making of a writer. Using the second person "You," it is as though Wakefield is a friend walking through Kurt's life alongside him, a guide for readers to his extraordinary life. The book also includes original art by Vonnegut and family photographs. Here is an American life, a burgeoning artist's life to inspire anyone who has read Vonnegut's work or who themselves aspire to write.

"Recommended Reading is swoon-worthy in every possible way! Bobby's story is a sheer delight and an ode to book lovers everywhere who believe that the magic of stories reaches beyond the page." --Julie Murphy, #1 New York Times bestselling authorIn this opposites-attract YA rom-com inspired by Emma, a failed romantic gesture puts a damper on a queer teen bookseller's summer of book matching and matchmaking until a handsome lifeguard and romance skeptic waltzes into his bookstore. Sometimes you get a second chance at happily ever after when you least expect it . . . Curvaceous, clever, and an avid reader, seventeen-year-old Bobby Ashton never misses a main character moment. So when it comes to asking out his crush, he plans a romantic gesture grand enough to go down in local history. Unfortunately, though, his extensive knowledge of every rom-com trope ever doesn't prepare him for how tragically he misreads the situation. Suddenly Bobby's very public romantic gesture turns into an ordeal so embarrassing it could be a villain origin story. Having masterfully shattered every plan for his perfect summer before college, Bobby's last resort is working at his uncle's sleepy bookstore. Soon, Bobby is expertly recommending books for customers to perfectly cure what ails them. Attempting to rebound after a breakup? There's a book for that. Trying to tame your crochety coworker? There's a book for that too. Then a plot twist Bobby never saw coming walks through the door in the form of Luke, an unfairly attractive and staunchly anti-romantic lifeguard. Bobby's blossoming connection with Luke reminds him of some of his favorite tropes: grumpy-sunshine, quippy banter, and even forced proximity. But after his last romantic disaster, should Bobby use all the tricks in his arsenal to turn Luke's head? Or is he misreading all the signs again? Do grand gestures really need to be so...grand? Perfect for fans of Becky Albertalli, Kacen Callender, and Jason June, Recommended Reading is a big-hearted rom-com about discovering love beyond what's in the books . . . but hey, the perfect recommendation can get you pretty far!

Excerpt from "Paydays" short story: World War II was going on and everyone was contributing to the war effort, including lady steelworkers. Many of these lady steelworkers were from small towns around Pittsburgh so they would rent a room in Christy Park to live in during the work-week and then return home on the weekend. Beautiful Miss DiMartini rented a room in my house. On paydays, she would dress up, and go out dancing in a downtown night club. One payday, my mom and dad were out. Music was playing in Miss DiMartini's room so I knocked on her door and asked if she needed anything. She opened the door, looked at me and smiled, and said no thanks but then asked if I knew how to dance. She was dressed in a shiny black dress and looked like a movie star. I remember getting so flustered that I told her "I love dancing but I don't know to do it." She said she would show me, kicked off her heels, put her arm around me, and started to teach me in the upstairs hallway. A slow song was playing on her radio and I was melting out of her arms and onto the floor.

Endless night befalls a sleepy seaside town, leaving it to young Madeline Tock to save her community from a threat known only as the Night Mother . . . The moon is stuck like a broken clock in the midnight sky, the sun a distant memory. No one in this quiet seaside town can remember how long this unnatural darkness has lasted. No one, that is, except for the curious girl who lives in the graveyard, caring for the dead: twelve-year-old Madeline Tock. In gratitude, the departed whisper their worries to her, sounding just like her overprotective but loving father: beware this endless night and she who causes it. Because there's someone else who can hear the whispers, too . . . someone whose gown is a map of the cosmos, hair a tangled constellation, eyes like the lights of faraway stars. The Night Mother. Her elemental duty is to gather the souls of the dead in her lantern, then send them to their eternal rest as beautiful moonlight. But when her hunger for power drives her to take souls from the living, Madeline bravely stands up to defend her town and those she loves. Can Madeline help bring back the sun, or will she be lured by the starry promises of this mysterious woman? Written by Jeremy Lambert (Doom Patrol, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Goosebumps) and richly illustrated by Alexa Sharpe (Lumberjanes, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Uncanny Magazine), The Night Mother is a lush gothic tale perfect for readers of all ages who relish in the wonder of the night sky.

    av Jason Landsel
    239,-

A graphic novel dramatizes a true story of a corrupt ruler, a courageous resister, a daring alpine escape, a refugee love story, a reckless return, a jealous traitor, and a martyr burned alive at the stake.Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I orders his half-brother, the bishop of Brixen, to eradicate all the heretics in Tyrol, and especially their leader, Jakob Hutter. Like other Anabaptists, Hutter has rejected armed revolt and embraced nonviolence. What if instead of overthrowing oppressive rulers, he asks, we create a peaceful and just alternative society ourselves?Driven into hiding and eventually forced to flee through the mountains into Moravia, Hutter realizes his dream and finds love. But persecution follows him. Despite death warrants, he and his pregnant wife, Katharina, return to Tyrol to support the underground movement there. They are betrayed by a friend turned informant and captured along with their baby. Jakob is burned at the stake in the town square of Innsbruck. Katharina escapes but soon meets a similar fate.Their story comes to life in this graphic novel, the second in a series that dramatically recreates a little-known chapter in the history of the Reformation. These radicals, labeled Anabaptists by their enemies, were ready to die for their vision. They were executed by thousands - by water, by fire, and by sword - in both Catholic and Protestant lands. This action-packed account of young people daring to standing up for their convictions will appeal to today's nonconformists.

When Bingo's best friend vanishes, the only literate person in a post-apocalyptic L.A. turns to her beloved, ancient books for inspiration, becoming the first detective in centuries. But to solve this mystery, Bingo must fight for her own life and uncover a conspiracy within this fragile civilization. Bingo Finder and every other teen in the sprawling farming village of Ellay know the tales of old days -- of how their great-great-great-grandparents rebuilt what was left of society after some apocalypse or whatever. But that's ancient history. Boring. Nah, for Bingo's generation, today is about staying busy -- distracted, even -- while tilling the reclaimed City of Industry fields or unloading barges at the seedy port of Bel Air. Or in Bingo's case, scavenging ruins for artifacts to upcycle and trade the bartering bazaars -- including Bingo's favorite leftovers, these old things called "books." Ever heard of 'em? Her favorites are the TECTIV books, the ones about men who walked rain-slicked streets at night in hats and trench coats. They searched for answers in a city called L.A., just like Bingo. It was their job. And after the mysterious disappearance of her best friend, Fenn, Bingo decides that's what she's gonna have to be if she wants to get answers-- a new kind of TECTIV for a new world. Because everyone may believe Fenn's disappearance was the first crime in a long time. But Bingo's about to learn that it wasn't. And it sure won't be the last...

In a society banned together by fear lies Bliss Creek, the perfect example of what can be accomplished if everyone simply complies with the social contract, the details of which are dictated by people they cannot see, who were elected by votes they did not cast, and all the questions these issues raise remain unasked. The fear stems from attacks that are constant and always on the outside of the walls, where the zoneless meet their fate for all to see on the never-ending news broadcasts. The area protected by Branch's army, called the Zones, is an ever-changing expanse depending on the cooperation provided by the people within. Bliss Creek is in the center of Zone 8, claimed to be the safest of all the Zones, or, perhaps, the most cooperative. Iz is a 17-year-old girl who wakes up in a hospital bed just outside of Bliss Creek, completely void of any memories. Making her way home and into her life, she has a constant wariness following her. In her home, there is no evidence of her having ever lived there, no pictures, no notes, no nick knacks. While her parents dote on her, and appear to love her, she continues to be haunted by the scraps of hidden clues she finds in her house, and in the dark recesses of her mind, indicating that things are not as they seem. These niggling little remnants of the past coupled with the strangeness of life in Bliss Creek make it difficult for Iz to accept the status quo.The choice to pursue a seemingly fruitless search into who she once was, where she came from, and why life in this sleepy little zone appears so inauthentic, or to simply continue in the safe, quiet existence she currently leads, is a constant internal battle for Iz. Will she decide to pursue the truth as to who she really is, or quietly live out her days as the person they all want her to be?This is one of my new favorites. I read it in one day! It reminds me of The Hunger Games series. Bliss Creek is set in a dystopian period, and the world is divided into zones. Most people live peacefully in zones with a group of individual rebels fighting with the zones. The story is a mystery of what happened to Iz wrapped into her unfolding love story. AL Willingham writes so descriptively she makes me feel like I am Iz, and gives me get a visual picture of the setting. I love Iz and I am very protective of her. I want to I can't wait to see the rest of the books. AL please publish more!!! Debi Burrows This book hooked me right away. A great dystopian story which kept me rooting for Iz to figure what had happened to her so I could know too. Looking forward to the next one.Grayson WeithmanThe author really has a way of painting a picture. I felt like I knew and could relate to Iz, the main character, from the first page. I can't wait to see what comes next! Definitely recommend!!! Melissa DuffyThis book grasped my attention from the first page to the last page. Enjoyed the storyline. Looking forward to book 2. In this compelling narrative, seven exceptionally talented individuals, each excelling in distinct fields, find themselves together in a psychiatric hospital. Here, they are under the care of an empathetic doctor who strives to help them confront their personal challenges and fulfil their aspirations. Their journey takes a turn with the arrival of an anorexic girl, who inspires them towards an action that has the potential to alter the world. However, their plans are threatened by two characters determined to thwart their efforts. Intriguingly, the story is peppered with numerous references to George Orwell's 1984, presenting a sort of literary treasure hunt for readers. Yet, in contrast to Orwell's dystopian vision, this tale leans towards a more utopian perspective. It is also imbued with elements reminiscent of fairy tales, adding layers of depth and whimsy to the narrative.

Luka was supposed to be a girl. He knows he was supposed to be a girl because his older brother Ray told him so. It's not that he always believes what Ray says, under normal circumstances he doesn't trust Ray at all, but in this case he knows Ray's telling the truth because he heard his mother say the same thing. Well not exactly the same, but almost. It was late one night when she'd had a bit to drink, she was crying and telling his father over and over again how unfair it was that he had his boys and she would never have her girl.Luka knows he was meant to be a girl because when he was eleven his mother had another baby, the baby he was meant to be, a baby girl, his baby sister, Jazzie.Luka wanted to hate Jazzie, thought it would be easy to hate her because she'd breezed into his life being what everyone had wanted him to be, but he found he couldn't, found he ended up loving her just as much as everyone else in the family did.Now things are completely different though, Jazzie and Luka's mother are dead. Luka's surprised at how much he misses Jazzie, how much he wants her back. More surprising than even that though is how angry he is at his mother for choosing Jazzie when she could have chosen him and Ray instead. In the days after the bomb blast that tore Luka's mum and Jazzie away, Luka's family begins to fall apart. His dad retreats to his bedroom with the blinds closed and the bed covers pulled up to his chin, refusing to eat and unable to string more than one or two words together. Ray slips into vigilante mode and starts stalking a family from school who he insists is responsible for the bombing. Luka, who has always been the peacemaker, tries desperately to hold everyone together whilst at the same time battling his own demons of guilt and rage. In the end Ray is arrested for harassing the family he thinks are responsible for the bombing. When the police bring Ray home Luka's dad is forced to get out of bed and face the world outside his bedroom. Sitting with the police in the lounge room it's the first time Ray, Luka and their dad hear about Luka's mum and how she talked her way into the kindergarten, past a policeman and in through the back door. Whilst the police are apologising and saying that the police officer concerned has been forced to resign, Luka, thinking he has found the final proof that his mother loved Jazzie more, collapses and looses consciousness for three days. When Luka finally wakes he starts crying and can't stop. He blurts out words to his father that he doesn't want to say, 'Mum chose Jazzie over me! If it had been me in the kindy she would have still chosen Jazzie, she would have come home instead of getting blown up.' Luka's both horrified and embarrassed by what he's saying, but his body won't let the words hide inside anymore. Luka thinks his dad will be angry, thinks his dad will tell him that he's being selfish and stupid, but all his dad does is sit and hold Luka to him, telling him over and over again that it's OK, that he understands, that sometimes he's felt exactly the same way himself. Luka, with the love of his father and surprisingly Ray, and the help of birthday presents and a card that his mum had prepared for him before she died, comes to realise that his mum did love him. He starts to accept that whether she loved Jazzie more is something he will never know and probably doesn't need to.

A spellbinding romantic fantasy about a powerful witch who will do anything to escape the remote island she's being held captive on, including blackmail a notorious, charming pirate who washes up on shore, from debut author Angela Montoya. Rosalinda is trapped on Sinner's Isle, an island filled with young women like her--Majestics, beautiful witches loathed by society for their dangerous magic yet revered by powerful men who want to use them. For years, she has been kept under the watchful, calculating eye of Doña Lucia. Now eighteen, Rosa will be the prized commodity at this year's Offering, a fiesta for the wealthy to engage in drink, damsels, and debauchery. That is why she must flee--before someone forces the vicious phantoms within her to destroy everything she touches. Handsome, swashbuckling Mariano has long sailed the high seas as the Prince of Pirates. Then the king's fleet attacks his father's infamous ship, leaving him marooned on Sinner's Isle with only an enchanted chain meant to lead him to his heart's desire. Instead, he falls into the hands of a brazen (although) bewitching headache--Rosa. Together they must outwit each other and their enemies before the Offering ends and it's too late to escape the perils of Sinner's Isle.
